Changes Coming To CBS News

It's interesting that the US and Canada are about the only major nations where the major network news organizations are in a city other than their capital (or semi-capital as in the case of Germany).

Interesting observation. The US & Canada might also be the only two countries where the capitol isn't also the nation's largest city.

I'm sure there are other exceptions.

My understanding is there have been some construction delays. This was more than just building a new set. This was building a new BUILDING. The CBS News headquarters in DC was demolished earlier this year, as well as the building next door. They are building a much larger, more modern building that will allow them to consolidate several offices around town. They've been operating in smaller, temporary spaces in the meantime. I asked someone I know at CBS what's going on with the Evening News set, and was told they're running behind, but it's coming soon. I imagine when they're ready to premiere it, there will be a big publicity blitz. But unfortunately they missed the bulk of the fall ratings period.

What was the point of demolishing the old building. It seemed perfectly fine from 2012 to 2015 whenever I watched cbs this morning with charlie rose.

I'm sure there are other exceptions.

Ecuador: Largest city and largest metro are Guayaquil.

Australia: Canberra is the 6th largest city / metro

Brazil: Brasilia is 4th largest city / metro.

China: Shanghai is larger than Beijing.

South Africa: Pretoria (administrative capital) is 5th largest.

But there are not many like that.

Who said it was? They got a new executive, she decided to shake things up a bit, and part of that included moving the evening news to another town.

Since it was mentioned and discussed here it seemed to me to be of some concern (or at least attention) to the people closer to the issues than me. I wouldn't think the background would make a bit of difference to the content and delivery of the news (although I do think the well traveled Muir is a bit excessive - especially doing "live shots" from Paradise, CA.

How are you so sure of this its not an obsession with him at all its because he undoubtedly has talent as a news anchor.

Many people have a good camera presence. That doesn’t mean their name keeps being brought up, especially someone who has shown he’s not particularly adept at being a team player.

It's more than the background. If you're based in that environment, it will have an effect on how you view what you do. The fact that O'Donnell was the CBS White House correspondent, and is more than just a reader of someone else's script should effect her presentation. Will it matter to the audience? Who knows?

Another aspect to consider is the availability of the 'movers and shakers'. Especially with today's politics, getting guests into a NYC studio from DC when the guest involved works in DC, is unreliable and expensive. This will be especially true in 2020.

Not sure what you mean by "unreliable." The networks have been hosting DC guests for over 50 years. In the old days of Huntley-Brinkley, Chet was in NY, while David was in DC.

The reliability issue comes from trying to get Senate, Congress-people, and candidates to keep their appointments for appearances on a news show at studios in NYC. Many times they don't show or cancel at the last minute because of schedule conflicts. Flights, hotels and car services are canceled, rundowns need to be re-written, Promotions needs to re-cut promos, etc. Being in the same town as the guests really cuts down on no-shows. Sure, one could get the guest to show up at a local DC bureau and put them into a two box with the host from NY, but the satellite delay and lack of sitting at the same table with them also diminishes the quality of the interview.

That's true, but it's the real world. Obviously why 60 Minutes insists on face-to-face. But for spot news coverage, the nets all have setups on the Hill, producers who co-ordinate with staffs, to get the people on camera with the host, and then they also have on-site reporters who can ask the questions directly without satellite delay. Plus they all have pretty large bureaus in town where they originate programs. The main thing about Norah is she was a beat reporter in DC before she did the Morning show, so being on location in Washington is natural for her. They fly the NYC hosts to DC a lot, and they get the NY-based Congressmen in the NY studios a lot. It would be nice if everyone was in the same place, but in the 24/7 news cycle, you get what you can when you can. Yes it's expensive, but that's the cost of doing business, as we say.

It's the real world? Really? I had no idea.

From what I'm hearing with colleagues at CBS, they want Norah to have in-studio access to news-makers. Live in-studio wherever possible for "exclusive" interviews inside the newscast. This is a model the other networks are moving to as well. ABC is rebuilding their bureau in DC, including new and larger studios, to accommodate future news-maker interviews too. NBC is consolidating their DC operations, including new studios for shows like MTP to North Capitol rather than two locations downtown plus the news bureau and MTP at Nebraska Ave.

CBS This Morning has always originated from New York.

So then what was produced out of the DC studios that are currently being demolished because i looked for any news on this studio and couldnt find anything on it being demolished or what programs were filmed from there? Thanks.

Face the Nation was the only CBS program regularly scheduled to broadcast from Washington as far as I know.
