WKHX Will Not Be The Wolf

So was the sound of the wolves in the background an attempt to play with us radio junkies? I doubt listeners en masse even gave a thought to it.

Cumulus Media flips WKHX-FM/Atlanta to "New Country 101.Five," a radio outlet airing the songs and sounds of Georgia's homegrown artists.

Taking a page out of Brian Phillips' KPLX book, where he only played Texas country for a while. In fact he refused to play a hit by Alabama because it wasn't Texas country!

So does that mean 101.5 won't play artists from other states? No Luke Combs, no Keith Urban, and no Tim McGraw? We'll see.

I would think that, in time, it will morph into a standard contemporary country station. I noticed that the only veteran Georgia artist on the list was Trisha Yearwood, who hasn't had a single hit the top 20 since 2007. No mention at all of Alan Jackson, the most successful Georgia country artist of a real boom period for the music -- unfortunately, that period was nearly 30 years ago.

Well, I wasn't correct as to guess #1 but at least guess #2 proved correct! :)

I think it is highly likely WKHX will rebrand no later than the first week of January.

"The Wolf" is probably the most likely moniker to succeed Kicks, but I'd also keep my eye on "New Country 101.5" and "My Country 101.5."

I'm already annoyed by the "101.FIVE" stylizing of the new moniker!!!

Just noticed they also added PM driver Lucas Phelan, who until recently was PD of Entercom's country station in Minneapolis.

Kicks now New Country

Nope. They have been playing artists from other states after the first hour.

Correct. The other thing I noticed is this is very currents-based country, with only a handful of Gold from the past ten years. New country means NEW country. I'm seeing some new artists sprinkled in as well.

So anyone who thought they might aim the music older will be disappointed. This whole rebrand is about retaking the young audience from The Bull.

Well, JJ is certainly sounding great.

I'm glad the station recognizes the value of Dallas. It seems rare these days when management looks at a jock as more than a commodity.

While Dallas is very effective, Kristen Gates on The Bull's morning show is a natural and perfect for that position. I'm wondering how The Bull will respond on the air. Looking forward to an interesting battle.

Sean Ross weighed in on the format change:

He didn't evaluate the talent changes, just the branding. Personally I don't see anything different in the station musically.

It's kind of hard to say how much New Country 101-FIVE will challenge The Bull. WKHX has an improved morning show--JJ is top notch--and PM driver Lucas Phelan is excellent. The imaging and other formatics are very polished, and the accent on Georgia probably will be a plus.

Keep in mind, however, that The Bull's positioning for a while has been "Atlanta's #1 for New Country." The Bull has Georgia Country Weekends, and plays and talks about Georgia artists. So I'm not sure how much of an incentive Bull listeners will have to switch. I doubt we'll know for a while since there might be some sampling of 101.5 before things eventually settle down.
