November 2019 PPMs

WIP rampages on; big jump for MGK, big dip for the B; Mega doubles to 1.2; and down towards the bottom, three streams, two HD2s and...an HD2 stream? Read it to believe it:

I listen to 104.5 HD2 quite alot, good variety of Active/Alternative rock and current content from Rock Nation, I also punch up WOGL and WMGKs sides on occasion. What I don't understand, is two sports stations with great numbers, and WMGK HD2 not showing, great oldies station...how is the Gambler doing?? When is R1 going to get the message and throw in the towel, Philly is a far cry from Baltimore. SMMFH...

The 0.1 rating is given is a sort of "participation trophy" by Nielsen to keep the money coming in. It is awarded if one PPM detects the signal for, I believe, 15 minutes at some point in the rating period. It could actually be a legitimate 0.1, representing hundreds or thousands of listeners, but Nielsen has chosen to make the rating basically meaningless to ensure that smaller operators keep subscribing.

The "thanks for subscribing" 0.1 is given to any subscribing station that gets one meter that qualifies for one quarter hour. That means listening for at least 5 discreet minutes in any 15 minute period.

Usually, those cases are HD2 and HD3 signals of subscribed clusters or major stations. There is no reason for a stand-alone station that gets a 0.1 to subscribe as no transactional buys are given to such low rated stations.

HD radio doesn't have the saturation or promotion to succeed. Those that DO have HD radios often aren't aware of the side channels and how to get to them. (I had to explain to my parents how to listen to KYW on 94.1-HD2.)

If no one knows WMGK-HD2 is playing great oldies other than by accidentally stumbling upon the signal, it's never going to get listeners.

Not sure if the absence of the Gambler is one of those "Nielsen not showing them/they don't subscribe" thing, or they legitimately get little listenership.

As for Radio One, if I remember from DavidEduardo correctly, all 3 of their stations bill better than the full-market signal of WRFF. Two of their signals are the tiniest FM signals in the market, and they target specifically the city. They're never going to be market #1's... but they make enough money for Radio One targeting an urban audience with their urban signal with an urban format. I really can't see many other formats working on those tiny signals.

I had WIP HD3 (WYSP) on today, wow Spike really freshened up the playlist, many tunes added, if you like Hair Metal, Alternative, Grunge, Classic and Hard Rock, this is the place to go..Its refreshing to see somebody actually caring about an HD side. But they do stream like WOGL HD2, which also stays updated, so maybe they have a good following over the net.
