Star Seems to Be All Christmas

I turned on Star 94-1 this morning, which I don't usually do in the AM, and they were calling themselves "the Christmas station." Then they played a Christmas song. Then I arrived at my destination and stopped listening. Just got a call from a friend who said they seem to have gone all Christmas.

I know this will lead to people on this board speculating Star will change formats after Christmas. Just my opinion, but I think that's unlikely. This should bring them some attention and sampling though.

All Christmas Star 94.1

I’d be curious to see what happens after. I mean, they’ve been on the radio for what, like 30 years now?! Maybe a new format would be good for them.

Since Star 94.1 is one of the weaker players in the market, it is doing better than a handful of Atlanta stations. Is it possible for some of the stations doing worse than Star 94.1 in the ratings to pickup the Hot AC format if Star were to flip at the beginning of the year?

When a new PD comes to town, I tend to monitor the station find out what tweaks/changes he or she is making.

In the case of Jerry McKenna at Star, very little has changed. The new TOH positioner, "Atlanta's Best Music," is totally unoriginal, and I wonder if it's a stopgap.

I don't know whether Star will flip formats, but I anticipate that something about the station's sound will be different after Christmas. At some point I expect a new morning show.

RadioInsight.com speculated that Star might be making a musical shift to a Classic Hits type of station because in reality, 97.1 the River is not a Classic Hits but more of a Classic Rock type of station. I would hope Star would be the real and office AC/Light AC station to compete head on with B98.5. B98.5 sounds more of a Hot AC than Soft AC....

Yes agree. I would like for them to go this direction as well. Something like the Blend on Sirius/XM or The Breeze on WUBL HD-3.

If there is one thing that has been consistent with Star over the last several years - it's that they'll always make the wrong decision. AC or classic hits all make sense for 12/26, but my guess is that they won't do it. Jerry McKenna has a predominantly pop / dance background from his days in New England. I don't think they brought him here to flip to classic hits. But then again, stranger things have happened.

That would also require another air-staff revamp - as the current staff doesn't really translate to any other format that would be older or softer sounding. I can't hear Kannon with a K talking up The Eagles (with an E). Hopefully 12/26 will mean a new morning show, someone please put Jenn out of her misery.

True classic hits (not The River's classic rock) or soft AC would be logical moves for Star, which has been getting pummeled in the CHR/Hot AC space. It wouldn't be as much of a pivot as, say, alternative.

Does Star's audience run older than Q99.7/Power 96/B98.5, particularly the first two? That would also help such a move. Star is not going to beat B98.5 at their own game.

Didn't Star flip their HD2 from classic hits to Entercom's Pride format? Not sure if that means anything.

I hope so, this is the best they have sounded in years,,,,at least we have oldies Christmas music, I love it..Come on David criticize me...This is feel good Christmas music, just like oldies are...

No, they never launched the format. I don’t know why they eliminated the HD3 channel completely.

I wonder why they wait two weeks before Christmas to make the switch. It won’t really make a huge difference in the Holiday book, will it?! But what do I know? It’s just odd for a Hot AC/CHR station to flip to Christmas....unless they have plans to flip it after Christmas!

This all makes sense honestly. If you've noticed CHR has become increasingly lighter. Used to be just CHR here Atlanta but hell, even Z100/New York's playlist is closer to a current-based Hot AC chart. Both Q and Power are the same as well. CHR is literally all Sam Smith, Khalid, Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Dan n Shay, Lauv, Selena Gomez and Shawn Mendes. I for one hate this as I personally prefer a slightly more rhythmic leaning CHR. But, here we are.... Lol

Anyway, my point is...Hot AC is just redundant almost everwhere now. I agree that Star could very well benefit from flipping to a TRUE AC station. WLTW/New York, WSPA/Greenville, WBBQ/Augusta, etc are ratings monsters! And there's been a hole in the Atlanta market here for a true AC. B98.5 should just call themselves Hot-AC at this point. They sound silly being that they're supposed to be the "lite" station here. But they also do well so... Who knows.

A (pop leaning) classic hits format could work as well. I for one would like to hear that one here. They could def go after a few Atlanta stations by playing Madonna, Patti LaBelle, Duran Duran, Stephanie Mills, Aerosmith, Billy Ocean, BonJovi, Janet/Michael Jackson, etc.

We'll see what happens tho. Watch... Probably NOTHING. Hahaha!

I think its smart of Star 94.1 to go Christmas. With Fish 104.7 being the only choice plus Fish's signal isn't as strong as 94.1 is. Seemed that way when I went to Atlanta 2 years ago near the Braves stadium part of town. As for Star I could seem them going possible soft AC. With that then B 98.5 would throw in some older songs.

Fish is a class C1, only 24kW but on a very tall tower. However, the Fish Stick is between Loganville and Winder, east of town. So building penetration intown is going to be a problem.

I've picked The Fish up in a car easily as far northwest as Cartersville or Calhoun.

Salem sould fid a way to get 94.1 becaue the fish forma that be a big success and a better signal would only help them
