Yacht Rock 990

Over the last few evenings in the northern suburbs I’ve been hearing 70s soft rock very reminiscent of SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio bleeding over WNTP. It hasn’t lasted long enough for me to identify this station yet. Does anyone know what station this might be?

WNTY's music mix doesn't sound like Yacht Rock. It's an uptempo classic hits station with plenty of guitar rock, soul, funk and disco, and not much soft rock. If you hear a Yacht Rock staple like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or "Baby Come Back," it's likely to be followed with "Brown Sugar," "Angel in the Centerfold," "Got To Give It Up" or the song that's playing now, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." The mystery station could indeed be WNTY cheating, but I'd have to see an extended sampling of the titles being heard to buy into that.

I heard it twice this week. A couple of nights ago they were playing the Doobie Brothers and last night it was Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty which is why I immediately thought of Yacht Rock. And it was definitely the station you mention because I heard "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" shortly before 7 this morning as well.

It's interesting because the times I heard the music at night it was shortly after 5 PM and as I mentioned this morning shortly before 7 AM. Perhaps there's a 15-30 minute window each day in which WNTP is running night time power while WNTY is running at full power.

Per the FCC's tables it's the other way around--in December WNTY has to cut power at 4:15 while WNTP can go till 4:30 with day power. For the other months it's similar, with NTP either switching at the same time as NTY or 15 minutes later.

And coincidentally, I was in my car last night and also heard "Baker Street" on 96.1, so the mystery is definitely solved.
 
I remember around 20 years ago WNTY got busted for running at day power until Midnight. At that time they were leased to a Hispanic Broadcaster. Coincidentally it was someone who was trying to listen to 990 Philly who was complaining about it. I believe back then 990 Philly played Contemporary Christian Music in some (or all) day parts.

Anyway you may want to bring this to WNTY's attention. 860-243-1115 is the number for Full Power Radio in Bloomfield, Connecticut. (In Bloomfield it's Radio 104.1, Bomba Radio, 102.9 The Whale, The Talk of Connecticut, and Kool Radio. Kool Radio being WNTY). When you call there is a menu of options to pick from. Select Engineering and you can leave a voicemail for their Chief Engineer.

BTW in my opinion WNTY's "Oldies" format is more interesting than the crap on 990 Philly these days. 990 Philly was better when they played Contemporary Christian Music.

LOL I'm really not even too familiar with the station as I only started listening to it because I like Chris Stigall. I listened to less than 5 minutes of it in the afternoon when I heard the music from WNTY before I switched back over to SiriusXM.
 
It most certainly is the Southington, Conn. station. I positively IDed it over the summer when it stopped-on-seek near Pottstown one night, cranking out the hits described above. At first I wondered if Wibbage was back, until I remembered the Phila. 990 has zero signal toward Pottstown at night.

Just a couple weeks ago I was driving on East Main Street/Ridge Pike itself, practically looking at the WNTP towers and hearing Southington underneath.

As for "the crap on 990 Philly" these days, it's one of the best possible uses for a somewhat-hampered regional AM facility and has more listeners/advertisers than you'd probably think. CCM had a nice, long, successful run on 990 WZZD, but with K-Love and Word FM and Reach FM and F.L.N. and Tune-In and I-Heart and Live365 and Shoutcast and Music Choice and XM/Sirius, the present 990 format has a much better chance on AM than the previous music one(s) in 2019.

FCC enforcement for decades has been dependent on the filing of complaints. Unless someone, particularly another station on the same channel, files a complaint, it is unlikely that the Commission will do anything.

When I was Chief Engineer at WNTP, until my retirement last February, we would periodically have problems with WNTY (or WXCT as is was once known). At one point I even spent time in CT doing signal strength readings to prove they were cheating. They played nice after that, but this has been ongoing periodically over the years. FYI... I contacted Salem this afternoon and let them know that WNTY is at it again.

Pretty sure four or five of those songs are on the WNTY playlist -- "Sara Smile" and "I Just Wanna Stop" for sure. I heard "Sing" on Great Eastern Radio's NH/VT classic hits mini-network driving up I-91 just last weekend. Not really a surprise, because the Carpenters' "Top of the World" is also on their playlist, but I hadn't heard "Sing" anywhere for years.

Call me Brammy. Anyway there was a 5 year period where I paid almost no attention to WNTY (WXCT at the time). It was from May 07 until January 2012 when they were Spanish Religion 24/7. I don't listen to religious programming in English, let alone Spanish - a language I don't understand. I'd only listen for one hour on Sundays if I wasn't working to listen to their Polka show because Polka Patti (may she rest in peace) was a friend of mine (I'm not Polish). I found out they flipped to Spanish CHR in January 2012 because I came across them playing a Spanish Hip-Hop song and then I heard a POWER 1270 ID. (Simulcasting WSPR/Springfield). I listen WNTY now because I like Oldies. I have a respect for Oldies because growing up my parents always had the Oldies station on - the now defunct BIG D 103 later known as 102.9 The Big D. When I'm not listening on my phone most of my listening of WNTY however is done on their 96.1 translator, not 990 AM. All in all Kool Radio as WNTY is known is an okay replacement Oldies Station for the now defunct 102.9 The Big D (interestingly enough as of 2018 the current incarnation of 102.9 a Classic Rock station known as The Whale is a sister station to WNTY). The only real complaints I have about Kool Radio are the minute long Top of the Hour Newscasts from Westwood One, The Wolfman Jack show, and the fact that even though all their DJs are voice-tracked, they're an automated jukebox 7PM-6AM and all day long on the weekends aside from specialty shows. Would it be that difficult for Kool Radio to pick up Tom Kent off the satellite dish to air 7PM-Midnight?
