TV-Related Predictions for 2020

Many, if not most, TV stations would turn unprofitable if they were denied the carriage fees they get now from the traditional distribution systems.

Do you have any idea of the median or average percentage of revenue a typical station makes from distribution fees? With the very heavy commercial load my local network affiliates have (Phoenix) I would think they are doing very nicely from their spots.

I say that after watching the CBS network news Friday night that had either a 6 or 7 spot commercial break. Getting as bad as radio.

Most of the network news spots are owned by the web. The station sells the adjacencies. Network radio and tv work on the original barter model. The station gets "hit programming" and can sell around it, sell local news and sell in syndicated stuff they buy.

I don't know what the fees represent in PHX. Keep in mind, though, that the networks also partake of fees. Each station or group negotiates with each cable carrier, as do the cable networks.

Nexstar to consider putting a 24/7 news app for their other owned outlets similar to KRON-ON in San Francisco.

I can see this being a big hit at WGN.

Speaking of Nexstar, they will definitely get rid of their national TV platforms, including the sale of WGN America and its stake in Food Network, and possibly sell or shut down Antenna TV.

At least two diginets will shut down completely, one once dominant one (ThisTV) and an independently owned one (LATV).

Antenna TV won't go away. They have what MeTV can't air. And classic Johnny Carson too!

They won't go away, but they need an owner that can take them to the next level. I don't see Nexstar doing that. MeTV and Cozi has all A- and B-level classic shows, even though Cozi seems to have gotten more contemporary with airing "The Office." After Antenna lost most of the classic Norman Lear sitcoms, they've just been "phoning it in."

Antenna TV needs to do something. They may air classics like McHale's Navy and Bewitched, but they also air dreck like Father Knows Best and The Joey Bishop Show, aka "The Unfunniest Sitcom in Television History," or "The Show Only Sinatra Could Love." When Joe Besser is the funniest guy on a show, something is definitely wrong.

Adding the forgettable '80s syndicated sitcom "It's A Living" is not going to help, either.

Then again, MeTV didn't help their cause by adding an hour of "The Flintstones" (which hasn't aged well) to evenings.

Yep. Father's Knows Best = gag. We don't have cable or satellite on the TV in the break room at work, so when the big 3 start the Impeachment crap at 9AM I switch the break room TV to Antenna TV. It's either that or local news on FOX 61 or court shows on CW 20 and My TV 9 which is followed by a Catholic Mass at 10AM on both. I have nothing against a TV station airing a church mass of any kind, but it doesn't belong on at work.

KTLA too should be in the running to have KTLA-ON for Nexstar as a response to go after CBSN Los Angeles for streaming news.

Sacramento would be in a similar position like San Francisco where CBSN Sacramento and Fox40-ON by Nexstar would have to compete for viewers once they get started and Chicago too.

https://tvnewscheck.com/article/top-news/242461/sinclair-raises-minimum-hourly-wage-to-15/

And the debates at various station owner groups to raise the minimum wage to $15/hour will come into play into 2020. Note Sinclair is one outlet that has announced that they will have a $15/hour wage.

But that was due to some states getting into debates over raising their minimum wages.

California

California is somewhat unique in that it has different rates for small and large employers. Small is defined as having 25 employees or fewer; large means 26 or more.

One of the most progressive states in the nation, California will have a $15 minimum wage in 2022.

The new 2020 rates are:

$12 for small employers
$13 for large employers
California does not have a different rate for tipped employees.

On the local area in Jackson, TN WJKT Fox 16, which is owned by Nexstar, could start to get their 9 PM CT news feed from WREG CBS 3 in Memphis, which is now also owned by Nexstar, since WLMT CW 30 was sold to Tegna.

Also I mentioned this in the Internet TV predictions but hopefully more major subchannels like Me TV will start making their live feed available on streaming devices like Roku.

Mike Bloomberg and Tom Steyer ads have run constantly in this conservative DMA. But they are nowhere near the top of the Democratic polls. Latest polls have them at the bottom, with Biden in 1st.
I haven't seen any Trump re-election ads yet, but I'm sure they are coming, even with impeachment.

I don't even want to know what the conventions will look like this summer. Too early for one thing. And like in my original prediction, a Democratic nominee may not be announced until right before the DNC. Opinions I'm sure will change from Biden to someone else.

Some of mine:

Fox's "The Masked Singer" will unseat NBC's "Sunday Night Football" as TV's #1 show for 2019-20, with its Season 3 premiere (which airs after Super Bowl LIV) getting more viewers than next week's Oscars; in addition, Fox will finish #1 among 18-49s with CBS still tops in households.

Thea Andrews joins "Entertainment Tonight" as Kevin Frazier's new co-host (she was previously co-host of their former sister show "The Insider")

Maria Sansone (who's been doing mostly local TV for the last few years) becomes the new host for "E! News" as it originates from New York

Disappointed with its ratings on Fox against CBS's Friday night lineup, "WWE Smackdown" moves back to either USA or SyFy

Felicity Huffman will be granted her first TV interview with "60 Minutes" (from either Scott Pelley or Anderson Cooper) about her involvement in the college cheating scandal

"Concentration" (Jack Narz) and the very rare 1980-81 version of "Let's Make A Deal" will be added to Buzzr

Bonneville International sells KSL-TV (Salt Lake City) to either Scripps (meaning KSTU would be their sister station) or Tegna

"NWA Powerrr" on YouTube will move from the GPB Studios to Center Stage Theater (where they did "WCW Saturday Night" for many years) just a few blocks up the road in Midtown Atlanta

STICKING WITH ATLANTA: Richard Belcher will retire from Atlanta TV after nearly 50 years at WXIA, WAGA, and WSB

"The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" gets its first guest host: Chris Hardwick!

Australian Rules football, which was an ESPN staple in its early years, comes to ESPN Plus with all games (including the AFL Grand Final) being shown live or on-demand

ONE NON-TV PREDICTION: Sandra Bullock and/or Jodie Foster will finally cave in and join social media (after Jennifer Aniston did at long last this year)!

Baloney. DVD sales are still pretty good, especially DVDs of TV shows made prior to digital TV, ancient movies, cartoons, and the like that don't need Blu-Ray. My collection is about 50-50 DVD and Blu-Ray. Why pay extra for a Blu-Ray of an old TV show or a non-Cinemascope movie made prior to the 1960s? Especially those made in black and white?

I think the article is probably considering DVD and Blu Ray combined. Also consider that this article came from Australia.
