WFAN....After Mike Francesca...

How did FAN fall so far so fast. Did they not have a real contingency plan in place post Francesa.

They're still among the top 3 billers in the market, if I remember David's most recent post on the topic. So I'm not sure they've fallen very far where it matters: in the dollars and cents. Francesa solo hasn't done well this year, but as the article says, Joe Benigno is a popular, established WFAN personality (amazing that he started out as a caller, Joe from Saddle River, who won an audition for his first WFAN job) and he should make a quick ratings impact in the pm drive slot.

This sentence stuck out:

"Benigno is represented by agent Mark Lepselter, who has had a big hand in the reshaping of FAN post-Francesa."

How does an agent have a "big hand" in reshaping a radio station? What about the PD? Where's Mark Chernoff?

But sure, I get it. Listeners identify with Joe, so he's the new mad dog.

I don't understand why he wasn't the first choice during Mikes first retirement.

Sports fans often hear and read of agents who steer their free-agent clients to teams with GMs whom the agent has dealt with before and has a good relationship. Maybe that describes Lepselter's relationship with WFAN's GM and/or program director. Has he represented other WFAN talent before?

1) If Brodie (former agent) can come in and reshape a team....call this guy radio's version of Brodie...Chernoff sounds like he's a yes man to ANYTHING (and ANYONE) that Mark suggests. Also, is it possible that Mark had ANYTHING to do with Carlin's firing? Who knows....

2) Benigno is the big question mark right now - why? Cos' he's been talking about retiring for a number of years - and the talk i've been hearing is that he may finally retire in 2020. Then what??

3) With all of this, I don't understand why JJ (who appeals to a much younger demo) has NOT been seriously considered for any of the slots in the "remaking" of this station - also, could he be the unknown factor that hasn't really come into play yet???

2020's gonna be interesting......

ESPN 98.7 seems suddenly willing to make some fairly aggressive programming moves in an effort to become more competitive with WFAN.

2020 might be an interesting year for Sports Radio in NYC.

you're right about the aggressive part - https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-...th-alan-hahn-for-new-york-focused-1-p-m-show/

and like i said above, when Benigno retires, the smart move would be for JJ to replace him (and let it be noted here, I am NOT a huge JJ fan - BUT...he DOES appeal to a younger male demo - I am female and 60.....)
