KQV

Any information on when (or If ) KQV 1410 is Returning to the Air ? The last Application info on the FCC site is March 11 2019.

KQV to return as a Good Music Easy Listing format

Word has it that through an article in the PG “Owner says summer return of 1410 KQV will likely feature music instead of news/talk format ”. Good Music Easy Listening format. I would think maybe they will possibly at some point simulcast KQV with WKGO FM as the KQV FM, time will tell.
It still maybe some time before that station gets back on the air with transmission testing. Diplexing a signal is complicated and an expensive process. Especially KQV from WEDOs tower, which has 2 translators on it already ,KQV broadcasting 24 hrs will be sharing 3 signals on 1 tower,WEDO and 2 translators. Diplexing Is a major engineering process, one area in eliminate multi path interference from other existing signals on the tower. KQV previously broadcast from 4 towers with a very complicated signal pattern both day and night, now KQV will be on 1 tower. Some of the equipment due to age may have needed to be replaced or is incompatible with the new transmission system and the new diplex tower. Much of the engineering heavy lifting so to speak when Diplexing is eliminating interference, among may issue is developing a grounding system that will allow KQVs signal strength to cover the Pittsburgh market consistently, as before during the daylight hours, and when powering down at dusk, without the signal fading in and out from interference. With AM the better the filtered grounding system, the stronger the signal and clearer KQV will sound both day and night.

The clock continues to tick down on the last time the clock was reset.
Any indications of them getting back on the air anytime soon?

I think this is extremely likely. It's not what I would do with the frequency (you may remember that Renda tried easy-listening on WIXZ in the 1970s and failed spectacularly), but I wish Bob and Ashley well. They've still got a couple of months to get it back on the air before the clock runs out, unless they find a way to reset it again.

On a related note, a great deal of my youth was spent listening to what came from those five towers on McKnight Road, and I am saddened to see them come down.

I'm with you Clark, I grew up at that site as a kid while my father worked there. Lots of history there.

The FCC has granted them another extension to remain off the air until January 10th, 2020.

On their application for it, KQV wrote (sorry for the all-caps):

"CONSIDERABLE WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED IN ORDER FOR STATION KQV TO RESUME BROADCASTING PURSUANT TO THE TERMS OF ITS 2018 CONSTRUCTION PERMIT. AT THE MOMENT, THE CHIEF SOURCE OF DELAY IS WAITING FOR THE LOCAL UTILITY COMPANY TO UPGRADE THE SITE TO 3 PHASE POWER TO ACCOMMODATE THE HIGHER POWER TRANSMITTER REQUIRED FOR STATION KQV. THE UPGRADED SERVICE IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE LOCAL UTILITY COMPANY BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER. AT THIS POINT IN THE PROCESS, IT IS EXPECTED THAT STATION KQV SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE AIR BY MID TO LATE-OCTOBER."

Yesterday (Dec. 18th) the FCC granted KQV Program Test Authority to transmit 5 kW daytime and 75 watts nighttime, diplexed on the WEDO site. It expires on February 17th, 2020.

Why can't they have 5000 watts at night? Then more of us could hear it in the car.

It's night protection requirements do not allow any more power.

KQV was previously licensed for 5000 watts both day and night, but is now licensed for 5000 watts days and 75 watts at night.

It is important to note that the former KQV facility was directional. The new facility is non-directional.

Good point. To avoid being directional, the "new" KQV is using the maximum power allowed without interfering with other stations.

The cost of building a directional facility, including land, engineering, construction, etc., were apparently prohibitive.

Was listening for a bit last evening. The signal is about what you would expect for a Class D.

I still can't figure out their game plan. Noncommercial with beautiful music. Won't generate a penny
of revenue and the electric bill for 5kW is substantial.

At some point you're likely to hear some health and medical infomercials on the station. That's what the owner does on some of his other stations.

That's what I would have expected but I doubt that will be the case.
He actually refiled the license as noncommercial. So far as I know he can't broker
any time for paid commercial broadcasts.
