SEC Football To ESPN in 2023

CBS was outbid by ESPN for the rights to the SEC college football rights. The current contract ends in 2023. It may actually be sooner, if ESPN buys the remaining years of the contract. What this means is Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and other powerhouse matchups will be on cable rather than broadcast TV. It comes at a time when broadcast TV is looking for exclusive content to keep viewers. Here's the rest of the story:

It wouldn't be a huge shock if they put the SEC games on ABC.

Could be...also less likely to see College Game Day in places like North Dakota or Iowa.

Can't blame CBS. They had a sweetheart deal, paying $55 million a year. The new deal will be over $300 million.

Three hundred million per year ?

Will CBS do any college football besides Army Navy, or get out of the way and let ESPN and Fox take over.

Doesn't CBS also have some small-time who-cares-conference football on its CBS Sports cable network? Think Rice vs. UTEP would make a good Saturday evening attraction on OTA CBS? Hmmmm ... suddenly, a full season of bedraggled independent UConn criss-crossing the country to become everyone's favorite homecoming cupcake opponent sounds pretty good!

I wonder how long before UConn football does back to the minor leagues. They will be lucky to air on ESPN3.

Good question. What made business sense at $55M likely does not at $300M. Not sure this is a winner for ESPN.

They may try to pry Notre Dame away from NBC when that deal is up. Fox locked up a good deal of the non-SEC market last year for awhile.

SEC will air on ABC when CBS deal ends in 2023 just my opinion as it was only one game ESPN aired most of SEC with SEC Network.

Among the so-called power conferences, only the Big 12 is without its own network. I'd imagine that's largely because the University of Texas decided to go rogue and hook up with ESPN for its own network. I can't imagine that's working out very well, since the Longhorns haven't been serious contenders in football or basketball for a while now. It looks like Kansas and Kansas State show up on ESPN+ or ESPN3 frequently, the other schools less often. How long before Texas sees the error of its ways and joins the rest of the league in a league network, presumably with an ESPN affiliation?

How much money does Texas get from ESPN. Doubt they want to change.

What are the chances that CBS does a deal with the Big 12. Maybe take a Viacom channel and flip it to the Big 12 network?
