Boom 103.9 will Rebrand to........

When it came to thinking of the dullest potential move, I don't know why I didn't think WPHI first. I guess it's about time for them to make another meaningless adjustment to their hip-hop property, no? I was originally thinking that Salem was going to ditch the Christian teaching on 560 and throw more syndicated conservative talk there (as was done on another of their properties recently) since no one else in town seems aching for an adjustment.

I know radio one is black owned but the might have to jump outside of the Hip Hop R&B gospel bubble

lmaorotfl, with their track record of flipping all their new acquired properties to black formats no matter how well their performing, in this area, 100.3 good performing alternative, 103.9 they are not doing any better then DARE and 107.7 now 107.9, last mom and pop station in the area always sounded refreshing. That would be like WURD hiring Alex Jones, O'Reilly and Trump as on air hosts, never ever will happen...

They’re. As in “they are.”

And they have a business model that works on a local and national level. That it’s not to your tastes is irrelevant.

Per Jim McGuinn, Y100 was the highest billing radio one property in Philly at the time of it's flip. However to be fair, it would've cost them alot to keep Preston & Steve for a format that at the time looked to be on a downward trend.

Black managed. Urban One is a public corporation and many shares are held by mutual fund and investment accounts.

Highest billing of a small cluster—context matters.

I would imagine most here....on a radio pro & enthusiast centric discussion board, know the context of their cluster size in this market to the level that it didn't needed to be stated. However, just to be clear if they had owned 10 stations, with good signals and had every possible urban format going, then y100 might've not been their highest billing property at the time of it's format flip.

They shouldn’t have messed with success. Y100 was billing more than their entire cluster combined after Y100 flipped.
Look how long Radio 104.5 is still going.

104.5 is the lowest billing full signal FM in the market. If one alt station can barely exist, how do you think that two of them would have done?

I think I read his question more as "See how long Radio 104.5 has been around now, why couldn't Y100 have been left alone and still running today?"

If you don't mind me asking, what was Y100's billing like before flipping in 2005 vs. Radio 104.5's billing now? (I know, ad $ is shrinking... the market was different back then etc. Just curious of the actual numbers.)

The apples to oranges comparison aside, it's THEIR station to with as they please. Is anyone here a shareholder? Our feelings about their decisions can be discussed, of course, but these arguments have been made and debunked so many times. It's not like they killed off Y100 on day one. Not even close to day one, in fact. Eventually urban fit into their business plan better in their (well deserved) opinion. I'm sure they'd rather be where they are as a cluster versus being saddled with the lowest billing major signal on the dial. It's just so much of the same. Race is involved in this, and that's ok because it is again a BUSINESS DECISION. RacISM, however, is not. Can we please finally dispense with that trope?

Written on my mobile so please forgive any typos.

I can look up the billing for that period, but am a bit limited now as I'm in the middle of transferring to a new main computer build with one of those Ryzen 3960x chips! I expect all the data files from the old box to transfer by tomorrow... there are 12 million files!

Y100 had a successful morning show. I think locally produced the biggest show in key demos???? radio 104.5 plays music. Not to say P&S had the sales drawing power of Howard Stern, but to paraphrase something Howard Stern recently said, when you have a product advertisers want to buy into (meaning his show on K-rock), you can force them to buy into other airtimes inorder to get access. If radio 1045 had P&S they would probably be billing fine. If radio one paid to keep P&S Y100 could still be here and billing fine.

Stern (being a unique case aside), a big morning show alone can't entirely mask the rest of the day indefinitely. No doubt a big help, but not a cure all.
