tdy subs gone for weeks

This is the second week WTDY HD2 ALT and HD3 Channel Q have been off the air, not dead air like WKXW HD2, but no subs at all, The HD1 main signal is still running. Could Entercom be pulling out of the HD sub business?

They are back after a three week hiatus, does anyone really care, if a tree falls in the forest....I might finally give up on HD, I gave it a try for over 10 years being a child of 60's T Radio but they failed (

I remember when that HD2 format was dance from when it first went HD in 2006 until 2017, and the playlist was not updated since 2012. So for 5 years it played the same music.
95.7-HD2 Club Ben is even worse. They went HD in 2007 and the playlist has never been updated to this date. You will not hear anything newer than the summer of 2007 on Club Ben.

WTDY HD2 Alternative and HD3 Channel Q have been off since the week before Halloween, they would be on and off before that but since then have never returned. I wonder if they will ever come back on, ALT 96.5 wasn't that bad. What I don't understand is why would WJBR HD2 simulcast the main signal with a two second delay, turn it off if you do not want to program something different on it, makes no sense, and as for WKXW running dead air on the 2 for months, what can I say. Maybe WPST has the right idea being the only full power commercial station in the metro still with no HD. SMMFH.

Unless you really have a viable operation to lease the HD sub to, it really would make zero sense in 2020 for anyone to invest in the technology. Since 'PST is a Townsquare property and sister of 1015, if they have had a vacancy for months now on their HD2, then there is clearly no demand at this stage. Why it hasn't been turned off is another issue entirely. I guess if you are equipped and operating HD in any way that iBiquity still gets a nice payment for those that opted for the technology over the years. I would agree though that were there something decent to listen to it (HD radio) may have gained a few listeners but certainly nothing of any true significance overall... just a means to legally feed a translator here in 2020. So I think PST made the right and smart move!

WPST's signal is diminutive compared to WKXW. 101.5 has been using HD for data since they first turned it on. They had no digital channels beyond the HD1 for several years, so while someone may have neglected to turn the HD2 off, Townsquare likely continues to monetize the data transmitted via HD technology on the superior 101.5 signal, with no reason to add it to the inferior 94.5.

If it came down to expense vs ROI and the "upgrade/downgrade" to HD radio yielded a net profit simply by leasing out the HD subchannels to other operators to feed translators, 'inferior/superior" coverage is irrelevant as the primary contour is the only thing that matters and where the translator contours fit within. Real world coverage is not important because realistically so few have HD radios or the interest to even scan the dial for what they offer. If you are speaking solely about a radio group investing in HD for their own purposes then I would say its not even remotely worth it here in this day and age for a multitude of reasons.

I think a good use for HD subs is to bring a missing format on a weak signal into the area, that otherwise cannot receive it, ala WOLD on 103.3 HD3, a great way to expand coverage. WMID would be a perfect fit on 101.5 HD2 or if 94.5 ever went HD and put a sub up. I'm not an expert but I would imagine it would cost no more than 1k a month to lease it and Gary has deep pockets. BTW 101.5 HD2 was music from India when they first went HD some years back then they completely dropped the HD until over a year ago. I guess the same format was/is on 103.3 HD2 currently so why duplicate.

A larger coverage area for the data services that 101.5 transmits is very important. The data services take bandwidth that would otherwise go to subchannels, limiting the quantity and/or quality of the subchannels. Plus, you can only lease out HD subchannels if there is a market for them, i.e. translators. Perhaps WPRB offered their HD subchannels cheaper than 101.5 for similar coverage, or maybe 101.5's data traffic limited the bandwidth available for subchannels; so PRB has 2 and 101.5 has none. The original WPRB HD2 tenant likely paid for the HD installation - WPRB itself has no reason of its own to implement HD.

NJ101.5 started out with just an HD1 channel (with lousy audio quality). On this board, we questioned why KXW even bothered with HD. I believe it was Tom McNally who confirmed that the original reason for 101.5's HD was data services. I guess they added HD2 later - perhaps before WPRB's HD was implemented? If 101.5 dropped HD, perhaps the data contract wasn't renewed.

A good HD2 format for 101.5 would be their weekend classic hits format. “The music comes out to play all the time on 101.5-HD2”. When the main HD1 is classic hits on the weekends, play 50s-70s oldies on the HD2.
I confirmed with WPRB that the Indian broadcaster on the HD2 paid for WPRB to go HD to feed a translator. They got a great deal to only pay the upfront cost of installation. WOLD leases the HD3 to feed a translator. WPRB used to go off the air every night before they went HD.

I think there has been more than one occupant on the HD2 of WPRB. While they were both products of Indian programming I believe the first group was/is different than the current operator. While the part about the first group paying for the install of the newly added HD configuration is true from what I've heard, they also paid a monthly lease for the channel as the story goes... definitely was not a freebie. And that first group, from my understanding, never had a translator which makes the whole story and the substantial expense even more bizarre. In the current arrangement, yes, the 2 & 3 feed translators respectively. There is always an interesting story to be told huh?!

and their off again lmao, after over two months they came back a few days ago and today gone again. Why is this the only Entercom property that is having this problem. I personally enjoy ALT 96.5. On another note, WENJ was booming in tonight with all 4 HDs (they never were a catch until tonight), what/where is this Rock 104.1 Classic Rock on the 4. Whatever it is its a better format on an HD4, then that crap WOGL and WSJO run.

After an extensive search, the only 104.1 at the shore I found is a simulcast of the main WENJ sports signal. Although there is a Classic Rock 104.1 website. I also heard a promo last night of the free beer and hotwings morning show, which makes me think they are somehow tied into the 105.7 hawk. Unfortunately that nice tropo last night is gone and I am getting a faint Reach on 104.1 from Marlton.

Here is the website: https://rock1041.com/

If you scroll down to the very bottom of the page you will see " ©2020 Rock 104.1 - South Jersey’s Classic Rock is part of the Loudwire Network, Townsquare Media, Inc. All rights reserved."

So Yes, there is a Townsquare connection to this station which would mean they more than likely aren't making any money leasing the HD4 of WENJ it's just a formality as the "primary" to W281BH... 250 watts at 300+ feet, not too bad with an Omni pattern...
