18.6 for B101.1's Holiday Book

That's the highest ever, if I'm not mistaken. Meanwhile, The Breeze dropped a full share to 3.0.

WMGK lost TWO shares! WRFF down to 2.2 but still higher than BEN-FM who slid one-and-a-half to 2.0.

Meaningless as the Holiday Book is, it's still kinda interesting to see these shifts and how Mariah Carey and Burl Ives can impact so many formats/stations.

Posted via mobile. Apologies for any typos.

Looks like most everyone took a huge hit from B's wild numbers. DAS, down. MGK way down. MMR decently down. XTU down. Breeze decently down. BEN way down. RFF decently down. Geez. Philly sure does love the same 100 Christmas songs over and over, don't they?

That’s because B101 didn’t have any competition in the market. Their usual competition WOGL is now co-owner. They used to play all older Christmas music until 2018 when Entercom bought B101.
Next year I see The Breeze going all Christmas instead of not playing a single Christmas song at all. Sunny 104.5 enjoyed a bump in the ratings even after B101 went all Christmas from 2003 onwards.
They might even go all Christmas early to provoke B101.

That is not the total reason. There are many markets with just one Christmas station; none of those others got that kind of share.

The Breeze did play some Christmas songs, though it was apparently a very small list of titles and they sprinkled them in less frequently than once per hour. Also, I don't know how close to Christmas they started doing so. I feel almost certain (though feel free to correct me) that they weren't doing it for the entirety of the Holiday book.

Interestingly, while lots of stations took a December-to-Holiday hit, WOGL dropped a mere tenth of a point. Entercom seems to have come up with (or accidentally stumbled onto) a way to boost B101.1 with Christmas music while not damaging their Classic Hits sister. (Of course, WOGL dropped from November-to-December which probably has something to do with the Christmas music on 101.1. And we're talking about shares...so...you know, grains of salt everywhere.)

Regarding WBEB: You can try to argue (as some almost certainly will) that everything's normal and fine and great...but it's undeniable that they've been off their usual mark since almost the minute Jerry sold. I'm interested in theories about a couple of things.

  1. Why did those declines occur? It started well before The Breeze debuted, though I'm sure the eventual competition didn't help. But on air, the product has barely changed at all. (I mean, they changed the name back and recently made some staff changes but otherwise, what's different?)
  2. Then suddenly, the best share they've ever had with the Holiday book--while again, nothing much about the on air product is any different.
Regarding all-Christmas on The Breeze: I think it's gonna be about the demos, where it really matters. Only iHeart knows what those numbers were like. But ad buyers are gonna want to know a little about them come the end of next year. If they're going to have a wee bit of trouble selling for a month out of the year, maybe they're OK with that based on how they perform during the other eleven months. Or maybe they're gonna say they want a piece of that pie. I mean, an 18.6 in the pageant numbers almost has to translate into some good numbers in the breakdowns.

Also of note: Between Sunny's demise and the advent of WOGL's all-Christmas format, I'm pretty sure there was at least a year or two when WBEB had Christmas all to themselves and they didn't do quite this well!

Worth noting: The all-Christmas stations in New York City (WLTW), Los Angeles (KOST), Chicago (WLIT), and Dallas (KDGE and KLTY) all exceeded their performances in last year's Holiday books. In San Francisco, the all-Christmas station (KOIT) matched its share from last year. Maybe for some reason, 2019 was just a good year for Christmas music in general.

Faulty memory bank: didn’t WOGL *not* go all Christmas in 2018? In which case, it’s not like the first time in a long time B had the Christmas tree field all to itself.

You are correct. WOGL did not do all-Christmas in 2018. WBEB came under the same ownership about three months before Christmas that year.

So they managed to top even last year with a roughly similar landscape (acknowledging there are no perfect parallels). Props to them.

It's a pretty wild book, no doubt about it. (Or I guess around here, it'd have to be called a pretty wired book.)

Just a general question do a decent number of people who line in the Philadelphia region listen to the Philadelphia local radio stations

Line in? You mean "live in"? What's a "decent number"? If some alien race of DXers hasn't turned the entire populace into zombie radio geeks, I would imagine that the 90-something percent of area residents who listen to radio listen primary, if not exclusively, to local stations.

What i am saying is out of all the people who live in the Philadelphia metropolitian area do a large amount of those people listen to Philadelphia commercial radio

That information is part of the Nielsen survey. It begins with something called Persons Using Radio.

"Persons Using Radio (PUR): The total Average Quarter-Hour audience for all radio in any particular time period and demographic in the Metro Survey Area of a market. Audience Composition: The age, sex and/or ethnic makeup of a station's listening audience."

Note that it says "all radio," not strictly commercial radio. So the non-com stations are included.

Nationally, Nielsen says the figure is 92%.

Got some demo insights courtesy of All Access. Holiday book so, ya know. But still seems kinda interesting. B101.1 was expected to dominate and, boy did they ever. Another across-the-board situation is WMMR, who had their worst number in over a year in all the breakdowns. I can't remember WPEN showing up on any of these lists lately, yet there they are in 6th place 18-34. I also found it interesting that WTDY landed at #3 18-34 with a "small loss" while Q102 ended up tying for 7th with WMGK (who fell five spots).

18-34
1. WBEB ("beyond enormous," their share is 4x larger than the station at #2)
2. WUSL (slight increase)
3. WTDY (small loss)
4. WIP-FM (slight increase)
5. WMMR (lowest number in over a year)
6. WPEN (best showing in a year)
7. WMGK (fell five spots)
T. WIOQ

18-49
1. WBEB ("pretty much doubled" their December share; beat their 2018 Holiday number by over two shares!)
2. WIP-FM (up)
3. WMMR (lowest number in over a year)
4. WUSL (up slightly)
5. WMGK ("rather large loss")
6. WDAS (small loss)

25-54
1. WBEB (almost doubled their December share; beat their 2018 Holiday number by a full share!)
2. WIP-FM
3. WMMR (lowest number in over a year)
4. WMGK (down)
T. WDAS (down)
