AM Frequency of the week: 610

Crystal Lake, IL....

Days: Splatter from WTMJ (Milwaukee)

Nights: Historically WDAF/now-KCSP, Uually with a good signal (5kw ND). But lately a new noise source has blocked KCSP as well as the rest of the lower part of the band. One night this past week, and with the new noismaker nulled, all I heard was a weak WTVN. So I presume they're still using their non-directional STA.

Retro: In the high school, I used to try repeatedly for WAYS (Charlotte). No luck with that, but I did hear WIP from Philadelphia a few times.

In Houston, it's local KILT Sportsradio 6-10 24/7. I'm 13 miles SSW of their transmitter and they're aimed right at me at night, so they're virtually un-nullable here. Driving north on I-45 towards Dallas at night, they're getting trashed <50 miles out of town.

Back in Tulsa in the 70's, WDAF KC was one of the strongest daytime signals and also dominated the frequency at night. I could hear the other two big KC stations (WHB and KCMO) during the day, but WDAF was by far the strongest.

In the near north Chicago suburbs daytime splatter from WTMJ. Nights mostly KCSP, formerly WDAF. I've heard WTVN a few times.

Retro: At night WIP used to come in from time to time.

I am located just 7.2 miles from the KCSP 5 kW non-directional transmitter. Formerly WDAF, the station has been broadcasting from this same site in Prairie Village, Kansas since 1937. KCSP is the strongest signal on the AM band at my location which is 25 miles southwest of downtown Kansas City. I never hear any stations under their broadcast signal at night at my location. Recently, they were not broadcasting any programming for a couple of hours during late afternoon "critical hours." Only the carrier was on. During this time period, I could clearly hear WMT on adjacent channel 600 and WTMJ on 620. Otherwise, these channels are covered with heavy splatter.

It was the same for me during my college years in Iowa in the late '60s. The three big Kansas City signals all easily made the 200-plus mile hop to my location, but WDAF was the strongest. And the only one that didn't disappear at night.

East Tennessee: 610 can be tough because of local WRJZ next door on 620. Nonetheless, I've heard WTVN around sunset. I don't remember hearing them with the full 5000 watt directional power (which would go the opposite direction), but did hear them last week on the 1,250 watt non-directional rig.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area: KCSP (WDAF) dominated at night, as soon as WTVN flipped to directional and dissapeared. Also caught Roanoke a few times.

Quincy, IL area: WDAF was pretty much audible all day, but especially at night and into the late morning.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usualy just splatter from WTMJ
Nightime: KCSP or WTVN

DX/RETRO: Besides KCSP and WTVN I have been noticing KDAL making frequent appearances lately. Others heard include KILT (Houston, TX), WZZK (Birmingham, AL), WIP (Philadelphia, PA), CKTB (St. Catharines, ON), CHNC (New Carlisle, PQ), couple Radio Rebelde outlets, XEEL (Fresnillo, Mexico). Also back in 1980's Radio America from Tegucigalpa, Honduras would make an appearance.

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime, nothing. At night, it depends where I am in relation to the lake. Far enough inland KCSP in Kansas City is the most likely station to appear. As I get closer to the lake WTVN in Columbus Ohio becomes increasingly likely. Sometimes also CKTB in Saint Catherines, ON (near Niagara Falls) makes an appearance.

Regarding WTVN, of course that's all I get here on 610 in Columbus. I'm about 10 miles ENE of their tower farm. On the normal directional pattern, or what used to be their normal pattern anyway, I was in one of their deep nulls and the signal went to perfect to garbage at the evening pattern change.
For the past two years, ever since they've been on the STA, I have received a fine signal at night.
When I drove by their towers last week, something I plan to do again tomorrow, there was zero sign of that sixth tower being replaced. For those who might not know, it came down in a high wind during some severe storms in April 2018. They went to 1,250 watts non-directional at night pretty much immediately and that's the way it's been ever since. That absolutely costs them coverage well to the north, as in up toward Toledo and beyond, but the flip side and more obvious benefit is an excellent signal all over the metro area.
Re Jim's KILT observation ... when I lived in Houston, I remember driving down 45 at night and hearing 610 chewing into itself until I was almost right on the towers. That directional pattern is so severe at all hours that one can be rounding the on and off ramps between 45 and Beltway 8 and hear the phasing that close, with the entire tower farm in sight less than a mile to the south.

Daytime - nothing

Nighttime - KEAR San Francisco (the former KFRC) weak but usually listenable.

Sometimes other stations mix with it but I've never been able to ID any of them.

In retrospect when KFRC was my favorite radio station when visiting the Bay Area, I never would have imagined they made it all the way out to Hawaii at night.

When I went back back to New Jersey after visiting California, I would null WIP in hopes of maybe hearing KFRC even though I realized there were many stations on the same frequency between there and San Francisco but DXer can still dream can't they? LOL

When I was in college in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where WIP was a lot easier to null out, I once heard WIOD and quite strong too which was an unexpected surprise.

One of the stations you may be hearing in back of KEAR could be KRTA Medford, Or which sends some signal in your direction. Also, KAVL Lancaster, Ca could be another.

Usually KCSP, which is hard to hear at all due to local powerhouse WMT on 600. If I can null WMT enough, KCSP is usually there. Remarkably, I've heard KDAL Duluth there a few times.

I forgot about KDAL. I heard them for the first time here a few months ago. Which was just before my new noise source intruded and made the channel problematic.

West Central Georgia:

Days: WAGG Birmingham AL 5000/610 religious fair to poor

Nights: Mix of WAGG and WIOD Miami FL 50000/20000 news/talk and WTVN Columbus OH 5000 news/talk

Ellensburg WA

Most dominant is KONA Kennewick WA day/night (News/Talk)
Also heard at night is KEAR San Francisco (Family Radio), KRTA Medford OR (Regional Mexican), and much rarer CHNL Kamloops BC (News/Talk/Oldies).
KVNU Logan UT (News/Talk) has been heard a couple of times, once at sunrise u/ KONA and another time when KONA was off at night.
KAVL Lancaster CA AFAIK is a one-time-only catch, with Fox Sports.
Used to get CKYL Peace River AB (Country), haven't heard them in forever, may have gone completely FM.
