Tony Romo getting paid!

After ESPN was rumored to be enticing Romo to move to MNF, CBS made sure that wasn't going to happen.

Tony Romo is staying in the CBS broadcast booth, with the sides agreeing to a long-term deal, a network spokesperson confirmed to multiple outlets Friday night.

According to the New York Post, Romo will receive $17 million per year. That would make the former quarterback the highest-paid NFL analyst in television history.

CBS is giving Romo a firm three-year deal to remain at the network, but it could grow to a 10-year deal, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. If the NFL extends its rights deal with CBS, Romo's deal extends by seven additional years, even if the new rights deal is for a term shorter than seven.‬

I think CBS is enamored by his ability to correctly call plays before the ball is snapped. But this is probably just a fleeting thing. At some point fans will likely tire of this to better enjoy the game. So good luck with that huge contract.

I just don't see what CBS sees in Romo. He seems like a nice guy, knows the game, and he's a former Dallas Cowboys QB (emphasis on the latter). But his inexperience as a broadcaster shows. No way he should be on CBS's #1 team. He's a #4 at best.

Just like he was never equal to Troy Aikman on the field, neither is he in the broadcast booth, at least not right now. He acts like too much of a good ol' boy, both in the booth and in commercials. That works for Terry Bradshaw, but Romo doesn't have the "football cred" (read: Super Bowl rings) to pull it off.

Neither is he as articulate as Aikman. Given a few more years, he could become a top notch game analyst, but right now he needs to improve his broadcasting skills.

Really? I agree that Romo isn't very polished, but I don't think there's any question Romo runs rings around Aikman -- or his predecessor, Phil Sims -- in the broadcast booth.

With Nantz/Sims and Buck/Aikman, CBS and Fox presented a professorial image of the NFL. On the other hand, analysts like John Madden, Jon Gruden, and Tony Romo combine a knowledge of the game and a sense of excitement.

And fan surveys indicated the Nantz/Romo booth is the fan favorite among current NFL broadcaster pairings. That's worth a lot. I did not vote in that survey, but I generally think it is accurate. Certainly my top two NFL broadcast teams would be Nantz/Romo and Michaels/Collinsworth. My third would probably be Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts.

The key factor in this was the competing offer from ESPN. It's possible they were simply driving up his value, but in any case, he ended up with the cash.

In my view, Romo is a better broadcaster than he was a QB. He made the right choice.
