Post your latest DX

For the past couple of weeks I've sometimes been hearing a new TIS station on 1610. It runs loops about wildlife, fishing, and history in Calhoun County, TX. After doing a lot of web searches, I found out that it's K-YAK, an LP station in or near Indianola that's run by the Texas Sea Grant Extension at Texas A&M University:

https://texasseagrant.org/programs/kyak-radio/index.html

Since K-YAK has a better signal than you'd expect for a TIS station about 150 miles away, I suspect that it has an authorization to run more than the usual 10 watts.

I'm going to contact the TX Sea Grant folks to see what I can find out about transmitter location and power, and I'll report back.

With what little i know, i didnt find a match in the fcc tis search, but some other travelers information stations arent licensed by the fcc, theyre by someone else. BUT they are always 4 letters, 3 numbers.. like WPJZ253.. they can call themselves whatever they want except when they have to id

Try this search for starters

Thanks for the link, SomeRadioGuy. I did a search on that site for 1610 kHz TIS stations in Texas, but nothing quite seems to match. I’m wondering now if K-YAK is actually an independent low-power station.

I sent an email to Texas Sea Grant and am waiting to hear back from them.

West Central Georgia:

Was fortunate to catch WINS 1010am all news from New York City last night here in Georgia for the first time. This is the only 50kw station from NYC I haven't been able to hear in Georgia. Their broadcast direction to the east doesn't favor listeners in the southeast. Plus they have to overcome relatively local 1010am stations WJXL Jacksonville FL 50000/30000 sports and WMOX Meridien MS 10000/1000 news/talk that I usually hear at night.

Have other listeners in the southeast heard WINS?

I never heard them in the Southeast, but they do send a small amount of their signal to the East Southeast. Good catch!

Just heard the widely reported TIS from Hudson County, New Jersey on 1710 kHz. Barely audible above the noise level with COVID information. Call sign is WQFG689. They are using 100 Watts.

KRVN Heard in Georgia

Noticed station interfering with the usual good signal from WCBS in New York City here in Georgia last night

Usual interference suspects are Cuba, WZAB Miami (was business, now Catholic), or daytimers on air at night

But heard several clear IDs and great plains agricultural weather reports from KRVN Lexington Nebraska - listened to Jim Bohannon show and confirmed this was KRVN by checking their online stream

Thought this was a very odd pick up - particularly at this time of year with poor DX and given the KRVN broadcast pattern that avoids the Eastern US

Have only received KRVN briefly and rarely here in the early morning when WCBS is in daylight and Lexington NE is still dark

Has anyone else in the Eastern US picked up KRVN recently?

What time was this? They must have remained on their ND pattern.

KRVN has a Special Temporary Authority on file to operate in day mode at 5 kilowatts, apparently due to antenna system damage. STA was granted in February of this year.

Thanks for clearing that up.

let me find out if theyve fixed everything, i seem to recall for some reason they did but let me double check, im friends with their director of engineering, and ill ask whats up

They fixed that months ago.... the situation over the weekend was an equipment malfunction .. its back to normal

New one for me. KDMR 1190 from Kansas City. Catholic programming. Came roaring in just after 5am CDT yesterday morning (7/12). Strong for about 7 minutes then disappeared. I'm guessing they were on 5kw day power, even though it was before sunrise. While it lasted, the signal was seemingly way too strong for just 500 watts. Radio was the Sony SRF-37 Walkman.

Nice catch cyberdad. Wish I could wake up at 5 in the morning to do some DXing.

I did pick up that one a few weeks ago, in the evening. (I admire your dedication for being able to get up before dawn this time of year.) I'd never heard it before so I'd guess there's a change in their pattern like you're suggesting.

Yeah how do you get up at that time.....yawn :)

For some reason, I usually wake up around 4 or 4:30AM. The SRF-37 sits right by my bed, so if I'm wide awake, I have at it. As often as not, after I'm awake for about an hour or an hour and a half, I'll fall back asleep for about another hour. I know its strange but I really can't exxplain it. Before I retired, I usually got up by 6am or before. And slept right until then. My problem is staying up until midnight or later. The result being that I don't even want to think about all the DX tests that I've missed....LOL!
