Local News in E. WA is in a sad state

Do they REALLY need to be in that HAPO Center every couple of months selling overpriced spas?

"BE ADVISED! Proudly (they are proud to keep scamming customers) renamed the Hapo Center..." This morning! On KIMA!

I wonder if their radio ads are still screwing up the name "Pasco." They run constantly on out-of-market Yakima FMs the whole week before the sale, I'm surprised they haven't taken over every commercial break on KXLE. (Pssst...they'll start doing it!)

I wonder if the HAPO Center has enough space for hot tubs and this Tri-City family expo at the same time? LOL.

As I posted before, this is a comedy of errors. In 2019 they finally pronounced Pasco correctly, but were still calling it Trak Center. Then they changed the venue to the correct name, Hapo Center, but reverted back pronouncing Pasco incorrectly. But of course this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! (That occurs 4 times a year). LOL.

I have occasional reason to visit Wenatchee every year. The tv provider at the super 8 has all of the Seattle stations, even Joetv. But tonight Komo was unwatchable with major pixilation problems. Don’t know the source of the problem. Also note this motel carries just one Spokane station KXLY.

My problem here is Spectrum keeps blacking out KOMO at the wrong times of the night. I understand them blacking it out for Wheel (KNDO duplication) but for the 6:00 news??? I get 5PM at least, but I normally just watch KING 5 now. Which just aired a heartwarming story about a man who overcame addiction with the help of a Snohomish County Sheriff.

I haven't seen any street scenes with Joyce Taylor and Greg Copeland (I normally watch at 6:30). They have a night shot of the waterfront usually behind them. Unless the studio is high up in that SoDo building which I don't think it is.

KNDU still having problems with picture freezes. Very notable during SNL last evening. Again, don't know if this is a KNDU problem or a Spectrum problem, but my guess would be the former. Also the SNL 10pm episode was interupted in mid-sketch by a commercial block. This is probably coming from Spokane, as I understand that is where the control is operating out of.

While I am on the subject, KNDU is, IMO, overdoing the weatherman Tim Adams goodbye. Last year they said he was retiring but would work occasionally. This year they are saying he will be working Monday-Wednesday, and saying "last chance to catch Tim", but will apparently occur for all of 2020. Good grief. Corny promos, and "last chance?" Wait until 2021 when he decides to give it another year! Longest retirement in tv news history. Give me a break.

And keep in mind Tim has only been at KNDU since the mid-2000s. Which doesn't make him a 'long-time' weatherman, at least to major market standards. Yes, corny as heck.
At least when Steve Raible cut back his time at KIRO, and just announced he would retire in late spring, I don't think KIRO ran promos advising viewers to 'look out for appearances of Steve Raible while you can!' Gawd Tri-Cities television, would make any Seattle anchor laugh out loud. See why I nearly always watch KING for local news...
I see they had another Spa sale this weekend. But it wasn't the dumb 'once in a lifetime' folks, in fact it was called the NW Spa Sale AND they said the name of the manufacturer. Less sketchy than the no-name idiots I think, and less annoying.

I think the spa wars have added a local or regional entrant, thus NW Spa Sale. Yeah, their spots are much less offensive. Good for them for fighting back! And guess what? They pronounce "Pasco" correctly!

KNDO and KAPP both airing Inslee's very important press conference closing all schools in the state
WHERE THE HELL IS KIMA. Seriously. Unbelievable.

KNDO and KAPP once again airing Inslee's press conference on the ban of restaurant and bars.
KIMA showing Y&R.
Just shut the news department down, they are worthless. I could say every swear word for the book for the station that 'takes action for you' my butt.

Somewhat old news, but former KAPP/KVEW anchor Mike Gonzalez has returned to the Tri after about a year and a half as the 4pm anchor at KPNX Phoenix. He apparently is doing PR/Media for the Franklin County PUD.

And speaking of KAPP/KVEW, they finally have a new set. With a real desk with what looks like the removal of the green screen, but I will have to double check that. Looks decent, not fantastic, but certainly an upgrade.

Social distancing at KAPP too, with Carissa by herself at the new desk and Jason near a monitor. Nice backdrop of the Columbia River behind the set. A little cramped and cheap-looking but far better than years of green screens. Way to go KAPP/KVEW!

Interesting...KHQ and KNDU/KNDO did a joint newscast tonight in the 6:30 slot (Family Feud in Tri-Cities). Surprisingly smooth transitions from Tracci Dial in Kennewick and Stephanie Vigil in Spokane. (I do wonder if this may be a joint newscast sometime in the future, but that is a topic for another time). Kudos for Cowles on this one, though.

Does KIMA feel any remorse for NOT airing Inslee's press conferences live? KNDO/KAPP/KOMO/KING all airing them. Makes no sense. :(

There are certain fcc rules on this but are rarely enforced. Usually the term “emergency” is used but I don’t think anyone in government cares to enforce.

What a silly, first-world comment. Clearly, most viewers don't see things the way you do.

With local news viewing showing huge increases over just the past two weeks, even low-budgeted stations are providing important information to the public. State Governor press conferences, in particular, are seeing massive viewership nationwide.

I'm guessing KIMA has no way to interrupt the CBS feed, knowing everything is centralized at KOMO Plaza?
They've done this before on breaking news. When Yakima jail inmates escaped a couple weeks ago they did not interrupt programming for that breaking news. I've seen other very important stories that should have called for a breaking news interruption, and yet they wait until 4:58:30P to cover it. Hours late. When Kittitas Sheriff Deputy Thompson was killed last year did KIMA run the funeral? Nah. KAPP did. And unlike KNDO and KAPP, they didn't bother to broadcast the news that night from Ellensburg.
Starting to think their budget went down the tubes when Fisher became Sinclair - maybe earlier than that. In the '80s/'90s they covered live local events like the Sunfair Parade and SunKings games...the only exception being the Sunnyside Xmas parade last December on their CW station, which is the only local non-news thing I've seen on KIMA in the six years I've lived out here.

Network is sent down the same line as all the other programming from KOMO/Seattle Hub, so yes, they can interrupt the feed for breaking news or whatever. I designed it that way.

I suspect these are News management/Management decisions to stay with scheduled programming. As mentioned, technically they could break in anytime.

It's difficult to find decent quality news staff coming up from the farm teams willing to work in a place like Yakima or Tri-Cities, (given the environmental and health issues alone) for relatively low wages. If there isn't anyone at the local station to do a cut-in, then they're probably opting to stay with the Hub.
