Corona virus and radio

Honestly, little if any. Maybe an uptick in KYW-AM and WHYY-FM for news and such. Know of a few stations going fully automated so expect to hear less live banter.

Whos going fully automated with no on air talent?

I've actually found myself listening to WMMR a bit more than Sirius and other out-of-market stations the past week.

Pierre Robert always does a great job navigating the waters and it's nice to know he's actually here, not voicetracked or sitting in a studio hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Sports talk might take a big hit since they have very little sports to talk about, and no sporting events to broadcast.

Having nothing to talk about may or may not be an impediment to people who want to talk about and hear talk about sports...desperately looking for some kind of content :)

Up in Boston, the sports talk stations have lots to talk about. First the bars are closed on St. Patrick’s Day and then Tommy’s announcement that he’s no longer a Pat.

I think WMMR will do well. As long as they’re live and local. Hearing Steve Morrison’s insane comments that are constantly firing out of that bald head each morning constantly make me laugh in spite of all that is going on currently. I’m glad that the P&S show is still there and Pierre and the rest of the air staff to be a familiar voice.
Heck, I want it to be Jim Gardner that says, the big story on Action News tonight is the world is ending. Somehow if Jim tells us, it won’t be as bad.

And sports talk radio is the next best thing to a sports bar. It's one way to be part of the camaraderie that is always a thing men share when talking about sports and the fill-in for personal contact. Guys can share their feelings about "men stuff" via the radio in these difficult days.

As I've always said, the format is really not "sports talk"; it is "guy talk". This is actually a big opportunity for sports station to provide moral support to men who are, today, uncertain about so many things.

I think WIP should simulcast KYW on FM for a month. See how well it does, then they could blow up 96.5 if it does well

Absolutely not. WIP makes a ton of money. They're not going to blow up that revenue stream (and hand listeners directly to 97.5 in the process)

Disrupt 3 radio stations for a month, move the simulcast around.. what are you smoking?

Wait isn't sports/talk in general going to have to announce which NBA Players came forward and got tested positive for COVID-19.

Why is this such a priority for you? Fans don't want to hear about it. Eighty percent of people who test positive show either no symptoms or very mild symptoms, anyway. It's not news unless there are games being played, and no games will be played until the positive tests tail off. Ticking off lists of players with a virus is deadly -- to listeners.

I'm wondering how the shut-ins working from home are going to tolerate listening indefinitely to the tight-playlist stations after being cooped up for any inconvenient duration. I also seriously doubt that such music stations will change a thing from what brung them to the dance in the first place.
I'm an outsider from the main audience, having worked 26 years in radio. But anecdotally I haven't had any radio in the house on in weeks now.

Story from a late, great pal of mine, Brooklyn's Harry Mankin, when he wound up on the coast working at Standards KFRC. It was at the time of the World Series earthquake. Naturally, all-news KCBS cleaned up. The PD at KFRC grumbled to anyone within range 'Yes, it was a big earthquake. However, Harris: it was not the biggest earthquake (Harry inserted a Drake tympani roll here) of ALL TIME!!!'
That commotion was well before the internet as we know it in 2020, of course.

With the active sports events having evaporated fttb, even sports radio is going to feel sore from all those elbow-bumps. What's left to say, except that NBA and college basketball players have been advised to maintain 7 feet social distance instead of 6 feet like the rest of us? Guys may, as David E suggests, flock belly up to the station's bar due to lack of options. But isn't that usually the case? Besides, none of the radio sports hosts is qualified to speak with authority on anything medical other than who's on the disabled list. Plus, bars and liquor stores are almost as endangered a species as toilet paper / old phone books.

I gotta go with RadioDX10. WHYY and KYW are positioned best to emerge.
That is, from anyone who is going to be listening to the radio for reassurance or information.
