KUOW Drops Trump Press Briefings Due To Misinformation

Not Shocking Local TV and Local radio stations around the nation have been pre-empting the Trump COVID-19 Press Conferences for the Governors and mayors "Shelter in Place" orders and "Non-essential business shutdown orders" This has been done everywhere for some time.

If people were really that interested in the White House Press Conferences they can just go straight to Cable news/talk channels at this point.

KUOW is the first public radio station that I'm aware of that has decided to do this. There may be more soon.

You know they say most work meetings can be an email? So can these 2 hour press conferences, that Trump is increasingly using as replacement for MAGA rallies.

NPR shifted policy today. Instead of preempting All Things Considered for the news conference, as they did Monday and Tuesday, they kept ATC going, while making the news conference audio available on the separate "breaking news" feed for stations that wanted to break away. I believe that will continue to be the policy going forward.

I wasn't aware they ever pre-empted either of the regular shows for anything. Their policy used to be to leave it up to the stations. Seems to me when there was a presidential address at night, they'd continue to ATC rollovers for the west coast on Channel 1, and put the president on Channel 2.

I don't think he is achieving what he wants.

Speaking as a programmer, and not as a Democrat or Republican, those news conferences are ultra-boring.

They need a good programmer to show them how to create a format that moves things along.

... maybe some a capella jingles to intro each segment, or at least a sounder.

They're not particularly interesting as a newsman either. One thing the president doesn't do well is read prepared text. He knows it.

The opening monologue could be called the opening monotone.

Well, KUOW, then. KUOW, like many NPR affiliates, appeals to intellectual liberals, most of whom do not want to listen to Trump speak. So, this decision makes sense for them.

Not sure what KIRO is doing about the press briefings. KIRO seems to attract a mixture of liberal and conservative listeners. Some of the hosts lean one way, some the other,

KUOW continues to score high in Seattle radio rankings (unfiltered). I'm sure many in commercial Seattle radio are very aware of this.

They don't care if he speaks. They care if he lies or gives misinformation. So far, no one has questioned that he's presented misinformation.

Here's KUOW's press release:

Tell me what's wrong in it.

I hate to tell you but everyone lies or presents misinformation -- politicians, corporate executives, the press, etc. -- regardless of his or her political leanings. The difference is which lies we, the viewers and listeners, choose to notice and which ones we don't. I watch or listen to them all -- MSNBC, CNN, Fox, NPR, KIRO, KFI (L.A.) -- and they all pick and choose what they want to report and how.

I don't say this to be cynical. I just think it is important to keep this in mind when listening to anyone speak or write. It's easier to see both sides of the argument that way. I imagine a good judge thinks this way. He or she knows both lawyers are bias; it's up to the the judge to weigh both "stories," as bias as they may be, and make a decision.

NBC started cutting away to regular programming a couple pressers ago when the information was no longer new, or when The President started rambling. Not surprisingly, OAN and FOX News carries the Presser's end to end.

Nobody should be surprised by this. With political rallies being shut down for both parties, and for whatever you think of his competency, the President being pretty savvy on understanding the importance of leading the news cycle. These pressers are just another way of staying top of mind with the public. All this talk of 'opening the country by Easter', is just another way of forcing himself into the spotlight by saying outrageous things. Think Howard Stern of politics.
