Coronavirus

With this virus I expect ratings to drop across the board

Not sure about that. Pretty sure news stations will probably pick up with people trying to get all the most current info about the situation.

Not as certain, but radio in general may pick up with many people stuck at home where they can put on their favorite stations anytime, but since nowadays there are so many other forms of entertainment accessible from home online, cable, etc..., I don't know about that. We'll see.

With millions of people sitting at home with nothing to do all day, ratings may go up.

Unfortunately, with many local businesses impacted by the current situation, even if ratings go up revenue may go down. There were some reports about a couple radio companies concerned with this.

No doubt that broadcast companies are taking a huge revenue hit. No point in their clients advertising if they aren't open, eh? Streaming, which is going strong right now, is an underrated pitch to advertisers. They can get far better demographical and location data from streams than they could ever get from PPM. But again, you can't get blood from a stone.

"Streams" are an ad medium. PPM is an audience measurement device.

The PPM software available to advertising agencies and big advertisers, as well as to stations, has all kinds of demographic data available. You can extract reports on income levels, specific counties and areas in the Metro Survey Area, you can break out by age, education, ethnicity and the like. And agencies buying the deeper data can even find our about a whole range of consumer habits ranging from the age of their vehicles to attendance at live sporting events.

Streams, on the other hand, can't really identify the person using an account. Is it dad, mom or the 13-year-old. Is the account set up in one home now in a different location?

I still get Internet marketing stuff (including those specific page banners) based on my home in Glendale, CA. But I have not been there for nearly a decade, and am in a totally separate metro area well over 100 miles away.

So it is not as simple as you think.

Update on WMWM:
For time being WMWM 91.7 Salem State will only have student DJs on, and only Mon-Fri 10 am to 2 pm when building is open. No community members
(Via staff email). ...though efforts being made for specialty shows/comm. members
