New York era Carson: what exists?

Johnny Carson's official YouTube channel recently released this Tonight Show interview of Marlon Brando from 1968. Of course it's commonly stated almost all of Carson's New York based Tonight Show was tossed by NBC execs. So some questions:
Why did this get saved when so much got tossed?
What do we know got saved, whether available to the public or not?
Is there any chance we can find further New York era Carson somewhere?

Johnny himself talked about this in several interviews. Carson Productions went to great lengths to seek out copies of the New York shows. I don't recall the details, but they found copies of the shows from other people. If you go to his website, the DVD collections contain bits from some of those shows, and that may be where the Brando interview came from.

The Paley Center (formerly the Museum of TV & Radio) has an extensive collection of Carson, including some from New York. You might go to PaleyCenter.org and "search the collection."

Anything saved before 1972 wound up being in personal collections that are slowly being revealed as media is being transferred to digital. So much wasn't saved due to cost and space issues. DC Video has transferred shows for the Carson Foundation/Productions. Here is the earliest on video.. https://youtu.be/TW0_npkgG_M Also some episodes were found in a storage building, an example. https://youtu.be/MQYzkgsb2h0

When Carson's final show ran all they were able to show from the first episode were audio clips and still photos.

When Antenna TV started showing Carson's shows from 1972 on they did a special where they showed that all the shows since he gained control of them are stored in a salt mine and are now in control of his nephew Jeff Sotzig.

Absolutely amazing. That's the oldest I've ever seen. The opening with the world's fair is priceless. Interesting to see how many of Johnny's mannerisms were continued through the entire 30 year run.

A salt mine? AKA Iron Mountain?

I had to do some digging but here's the info:

Interesting...thanks for that. I never heard of them. Iron Mountain is a similar company where music companies such as Sony store its masters.

Ironic that it was around the time that article was released in 2010 that the fire hit the archive at Universal Studios. No fire in Underground vaults.
