Will the Virus Affect the Ratings?

I'm wondering whether the coronavirus will affect the Persons 6+ shares and rankings of the radio stations.

Will WSB have an even greater share?

Will the Sports stations lose audience because no games are being played? I'm sure there's a core of people who listen only to Sports radio, but what about more casual listeners?

Will the closure of offices, restaurants and some retail businesses have an effect on B98.5's numbers?

I don't know the answers, but I would love to hear what other posters think. I'm guessing the PPM will cover from mid-March to mid-April.

Ratings won't matter if there are no advertisers.

Immediately, yes.

But in the long run, it shows the importance of radio and will allow some advertisers that are "too focused" on the new media to return to using radio and broadcast TV as well.

This just in from Nielsen:

83% of Americans say they are listening more or the same to AM/FM radio because of the Coronavirus outbreak
55% of Americans say they are listening to AM/FM radio the same. 28% say they are listening more. Only 17% are listening less. 26% say they are listening more to audio at home. Across a variety of devices, time spent listening is up.

I was going to make a separate 'ATL radio reacts' post but, since I don't listen to many other stations (besides 95.5 WSB), I'll just slide this in. As a fangeek of CHR... IMO, Power is sounding incredible during this time. PK and the Power Morning Show have extended their show which now runs until 12 Noon. Helping out, taking calls from first responders, nurses, doctors and local businesses. Also sounding great with a live "Cheer/Shoutout for essential workers" with a dance party every night at 8pm (social media videos show listeners dancing on downtown Atlanta porches and balconies). That being said, this should boost their listener ratings as well.

I tend to like it when radio stations sort of go outside the box like this. Especially with an occasional 'break the format' song thrown in the mix. Lol So, what are your thoughts on what other Atlanta (music) stations are doing differently during this time?

When you have a nationwide problem that is "not normal", you have a fantastic opportunity to be creative in many different ways - no matter what format you're running. I'm looking for stations that will "think outside the box" and air accordingly.

I sure most everyone on this board have novel ideas that Atlanta stations can implement. Please share.

Well, a few major AC stations have gone all Christmas. It fits "novel idea". But whether it was the right idea is a question. It might prove to be, but I have no appetite for Christmas music in April.

I have a different view on that. Mine is when you have a problem that's "not normal," people seek something that reminds them of what was normal. Something that brings them back to what was their normal routine. That's what radio does. There may be chaos and craziness in the world, but in the cocoon of the radio, it's still safe and warm.

The "cocoon of radio" BigA??!!

Ain't so warm an fuzzy radio wise, down in my neck of the woods.

I don't think of listening to the radio as making me feel "safe and warm." On the contrary.

I'm hardly listening. I wonder who else is already bored with this crisis. Bring on Venezuela...
