Jammin' Hits on 1170am

West Central Georgia:

Heard strong clear signal from WDAK in Lexington/Columbia SC last night on 1170am playing Jammin' Hits. They are authorized to broadcast 10000 watts daytime and 3300 critical hours but nothing at night. I enjoyed the music on this usual empty frequency here in Georgia. KFAQ Tulsa and WWVA Wheeling are rare visitors on this frequency here.
Maybe this will help someone add South Carolina to their list of DX states if they continue broadcasting at night for a while.

I'll have to give it a try. 10kw Non-directional should easily make it into the Chicago area at night. And 1170 is a relatively empty channel once you get away from WYLL (1160) splatter. BTW the call letters are WDEK. WDAK is right there in your state, Columbus, Georgia on 540. They used to be heard from time to time here in the Midwest before they dropped night power to 38 watts.

Sorry for the typo. Yes WDEK. It was still broadcasting last night with a strong clear signal. Enjoyed the music! Hope someone in the outside the Southeast US can catch it before they start following the rules!

I'm pretty sure I had WDEK at around 4:00am CDT this morning, but I couldn't get a positive ID. What I heard was a very weak signal with music. The music itself made it unusual for 1170 at my location, but what really set it off was a pounding pulsating beat. It was only in for about five minutes, some of which was under KBOB (Davenport, IA.)

WDEK Lexington/Columbia SC 1170 AM still broadcasting all night with old Motown music. I'm enjoying it while it lasts....

So this morning would have been your first known appearance of any station with the WDEK calls in your area since 2008. When the former WDEK-FM in DeKalb changed its calls to WCPY (then WCPT before now becoming WCLR).

I heard the "pulsing beat" on 1170 about an hour before dawn this morning. Again, I couldn't identify it....or for that matter make out anything else. I'll keep trying to see if I can pick up a positive ID. But there's very little doubt in my mind that it's WDEK.

I had forgotten that 92.5 here was WDEK before it became WCPY and then WCLR. That signal from DeKalb, IL, about 35 miles southwest of me, began life as WLBK-FM simulcasting 1kw WLBK-AM/1360. Both WDEK and WLBK have a fair-good signal here, although WLBK disappears at night. The WCLR call letters have a long history in the Chicago area. First here in Crystal Lake, on our local 850 when they originally came on as a 500-watt daytimer in 1965, Then on the 101.9 full-facility signal from downtown Chicago. And now 60 miles west of there in DeKalb.

Update: I tried 1170 again this morning about an hour before sunrise. Nothing but a few unidentifiable weak signals. No music. Then this evening I got the bright idea of trying the Edinburgh, Indiana SDR. WDEK was there. "Jammiin Hits" weak, but on top. Obviously on after sunset. I'm going to guess they're at 3kw (critical hours power). I'll keep trying to see if I can snag WDEK with a positive ID here it home northwest of Chicago. Probably about 225 miles northwest of Edinburgh, IN.

West Central Georgia:

WDEK 1170 am keeps going night after night with "Jammin' Hits for Grown Ups" = Motown + other great music.

Hope someone in the midwest can catch this South Carolina station before they go back to following the rules.
