Boston Radio Ratings March 2020.

https://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb013

WROR & WXKS are tied for #1.

WBZ FM hanging in the top 5 for whatever reason even without actual sports to talk about.

WBOS & WXRV making nice moves up.

WERS is tied with WODS near the bottom.

A good part of the "March" book was in late February and the portion of March when sports was still going on. The Celtics and Bruins were still playing and having good seasons. The real impact will show in the "April" ratings, which will be made public in mid-May.

I know these are total audience and not any specific demo but geez WODS looks pathetic. I can’t imagine, even when broken down, that they are doing well. New format needed? Alternative? Classic hits, leaning toward women? Classic Rythmic?

We've been down this road many times during the past two years.

Would you flip formats at a time when you have no revenue and no money for marketing?

Plus the fact that we're at a time when radio listenership isn't stable.

Today is not a great day to launch a new format; but a great time to prepare for a new format once the commute starts back up, especially as listener habits may be in flux when they begin leaving their homes again.

IDEA FOR WODS!

Why doesn't WODS launch a classical music format supported by advertisers? It can work again. We can introduce young people to classical music and show that it's the basis for popular music. In fact, after a classical work has been played, you can play a song based on the work that was just aired.

I like classical music, and I like most popular music. This, however, sounds about as appealing to me as a colonoscopy.

No way I can top that....

... but maybe I can bottom it!

Not for hip-hop or many of the rhythm-dominated Latino genres.

Many of the Latin genres, from Brazil to the Caribbean, are based on African influences and have much less to do with European music. Not absolute, but astoundingly deep traditional music elements prevail.

I'm trying to think of the last commercially successful classical station in the Western Hemisphere and can't pin it down... but it was pretty long ago.

Probably WFMT Chicago. It's still in operation. "Commercially successful" is a relative term.

But WCRB Boston switched to non-commercial operation in 2006.

All I can think of is that old TV commercial for "120 Music Masterpieces," the one that started with English actor John Williams describing how "Stranger in Paradise" took its melody from Borodin, then playing excerpts of other familiar classical compositions. Somehow, I can't see a similar ad featuring Usher's "Yeah" and a Vivaldi violin piece.

The other takeaway from the March ratings is WBZ doesn't appear to be losing any listeners as a result of its overnight programming.

Fur Elise into Nas "I Can."

Does the idea sound any better now that I've articulated it?

No. If that example does anything for me, it makes it less appealing. I've got to think the Venn diagram of those who would listen to both classical and hip-hop is nearly empty.

WEEI

WEEI continues to drop like a rock. Any way their local sports talk format survives this?

TB12 drama is probably the only thing that's kept them afloat so far this year.

Maybe more Patriots soap opera speculation can keep things going for a bit, but how much longer?
