The mightier 1090 returns to san diego!

The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that an investor has leased the AM 1090 frequency for the next five years to bring back sports programming as "The Mightier 1090."

The U-T flubbed the headline saying that the station "bought" the frequency.

I had hoped to post a PDF file with the article since the U-T is behind a partial paywall, but the radiodiscussions.com doesn't allow PDF attachments bigger than 19.5KB.

I love when people think that because a station had great coverage back in the 70's that they will equal that now...with all the man-made electrical interference from nearly anything with a computer chip or a wall wart power supply in or next to them.

The station is so directional that even parts of East County don't get them all that well. And by the time you get to mid-Orange County... except right on the beach... the signal is worthless.

This is all a good example of someone who wants a radio station but does not know radio.

Gosh, even the name sucks.

How is Sports/Talk viable today especially when Fox Sports and Disney's ESPN on the TV side are talking about pay cuts and furloughs in response to COVID-19. Also Sports/talk needs fresh content from the leagues to survive though. Also the leagues are on shutdown and that leaves sports pundits with an uncertain future over re-opening though.

How do you feel about "The Mightiest 1090!"? :)

I seem to remember 1090 sometimes getting better ratings toward the end of its sports run than 97.3 KWFN, an FM sports station owned by Entercom. Let's hope sports events will be back in a few months. By the time 1090 XEPRS is on the air, I would think we'd have the MLB underway.

And I'm not sure the signal is so bad. I got it quite well driving around in Los Angeles County in the daytime a few years ago. I think it covers San Diego County well. Of course, if XEPRS is run cheaply, with lots of ESPN shows, while KWFM is mostly local, then it probably won't fare well.

I'm waiting to see if 1090's new operators improve the signal. As I've mentioned on this forum before, 1090's signal strength went down about a year ago (around when the previous operators lost their lease). My readings indicate they may currently only be at 5-10kw. Maybe the transmitter owners didn't want a 50kw power bill with no lease income to offset it.

Just curious; how are your "readings" calculating the station' power? Signal meter on your radio?

I personally prefer the tuning meter from a De Lorean...

I have a signal meter on my old Sony portable. But the readings don't actually calculate the station's power. Based on the readings, I make an educated guess :)

I recommend removing "educated" out of that statement.. A portable radio signal strength indicator is not able to determine field strength between a 1kW station vs. a 50kW station. Especially at a random distance and conditions.

Granted. But a signal meter on a portable would be able to indicate a drop in power if it's a station the radio owner has listened to enough in the past, and he is used to the radio. I can definitely tell when some locals drop power at sunset, and the meters on my portables also indicate the drop in power.

But estimation of the amount of power -- you're correct there, obviously.
