A replacement DX Test: KJJR 880 Kalispell, MT Sat May 2nd 12:01am Mountain

I posted on Facebook that the KBOZ DX Test had been cancelled and engineer Todd Clark in Kalispell, MT offered up one of his stations for a test.

KJJR 880 Whitefish, MT(Kalispell) will test for 1 hour at 10kw non directional Saturday May 2nd 12:01am to 1am mountain time. It will consist of morse code, sweep tones, along with various telephone sound effects

There will be no paper QSL's issued for this test. Only emailed confirmation. Send an email to [email protected] with "KJJR 880 DX Test" in the email (You MUST put that in that subject line so I don't accidentally delete it thinking its spam!). The reply will likely be a simple email reply with details of the station and confirming the details of what/when you heard it. You WILL get a reply from me in due course, please give me some time!

This is done on short notice and being kept simple as to not burden anyone involved. Thanks to Les Rayburn for creating the test material and Todd Clark for generously offering up the station. I've already seen communication between him and the station, asking them to block out an hour from the logs, so he can tinker around with things at the tower site.

I know, I know.. we've had a few false starts on DX tests, but I can only do what I can do.

Any questions? Email me and I'll be glad to answer. Pass this word to other DX email groups, facebook groups, websites, etc

I will try to listen, but it will probably be pretty tough to null WCBS in Northern Illinois.

KJJR might be possible down here in Phoenix, Arizona, especially if it is 10,000 watts non-directional. KRVN from Lexington, Nebraska dominates this frequency at night with the occasional mixing from an unknown station. KJJR may be possible in Arizona. I’ll give a listen at 11:01 PM Arizona time on what would be Friday night here. Let us know if plans change!

KJJR loud 'n clear here
Go go go!

KRVN loud and clear with "Coast to Coast". KJJR with sweep tones, morse code ID and 1 KHz tone under KRVN.
Two other stations fading in and out. One was music, then speech...sounded like Navajo from KHAC, Tse Bonito, NM. They might be on 10 KW, rather than 430 W night power. Not sure what the other station was.

Heard from 12:01 to about 12:20 AM. Car radio in the parking lot, under the metal awning. QRM was not too bad, since many LED lights and big-scream TV sets were off. ADSL RFI has been horrendous lately, but not noticed tonight during the test.
Midvale is in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley.

Similar results on the Northern Utah SDR at Corrine. It's closer to you, but the NIVS antenna may be a bit short of reach.

I tried from Houston, listening from 1:00-1:25 CDT using an XHDATA D808 portable and a small loop. All I could hear was KRVN with 2 Spanish stations underneath. One was presumed KJOJ in Conroe (40 miles from here), the other Radio Progreso from Cuba. Not a whiff of Morse or tones.

Conditions seemed to favor the south, with lots of Cubans etc.

So far, the farthest report I have is from New Zealand .. i also have a report from 40 miles west of NYC

Both are verified with an audio recording or a written log from a known trusted DXer that matches my original test file material.

Amazing getting a report near NYC with WCBS so close. Good going!

The DXer 40 miles west of WCBS sent me some audio.. its weak but its there.

The Invercargill reference was just a tease, to see if anybody recognized the most famous address in DX'ing. That was Arthur Cushen's home. He operated from there all his life.

Very good! Did you get audio from the New Zealand listener? I would love to hear that.

Ain a week or two when all reports have filtered in i'll post a report

I'll look forward to seeing the report. Sounds like the test was a huge success. Sorry and embarrassed to admit I missed it. I was trying to stay up for it, but nodded off a little after midnight (CDT). Didn't wake up until 3:30. I tuned to 880, and heard WCBS getting clobbered by CKLQ. What that told me was conditions to the north and/or west were good, and I more than likely missed hearing KJJR for myself.

I seem to be the only one that tried and failed to hear this...

At any rate, thanks to Paul for setting it up!
