WYRD/Greenville Expands to Pickens & Oconee Counties

https://news.****************/articles/n38688/WYRD-Greenville-Expands-to-Pickens-&-Oconee-Counties

Entercom has announced that WYRD has a translator on 95.1 FM for the Pickens County and Oconee County area.

W236CD is listed as (another) translator for WLFJ-FM and *NOT* WYRD-FM so I'm suprised that this is even ok...same goes for the Anderson translator at 101.5 (for WFBC HD).

Wouldn't it be easier/better to put this on a larger signal...They are on way too many options just for one station.

106.3 Greenville / Spartanburg
(already covers most of the market just fine)
101.5 Anderson
95.1 Seneca / Clemson
93.7 WFBC HD-4
98.9 WSPA HD-2

And not long ago they were also on AM.
I think that AM would be a much better option. Ever since Charlie FM went off of 106.3 I don't think it's been worth it for them....

94.5 WGTK in Greenville I think sounds a whole lot better and with a much stronger signal that covers all these areas with just one frequency.

I wouldnt be surprised to see W236CD being fed by one of the HD Channels, sometimes online databases dont catch up with the latest fcc filing right away.

If they had a larger signal to put this on they might but WYRD is #2 in the market ratings wise, their other stations do well ratings wise.. so why crater whats making money? Just because its not as high rated as WYRD doesnt mean its not making money

And why the f*q would you put this on AM? THere is NO AM Signal that covers the Greenville/Spartanburg market perfectly day and night, with the market being more than just greenville and spartanburg county .. so youd lose listeners by moving it to AM and not reachign the entire market and some younger folks will listen to a station simply because its on FM because they wouldnt when its on AM

I also wouldnt be surprised to see some small breakaways for local programming on these HD Fed translators.. maybe for sports in the fall that no one else is covering on other radio stations

Translators can change the station they relay before they have to notify the FCC so long as they obtain permission from the new station they're relaying and follow the legal requirements for relaying the station.

You work with what you have. I'm sure Entercom wishes it had a better signal for WYRD-FM, but which station would it get rid of? The only logical place to move it would be 93.3, but it would still probably want a translator in Anderson with it. So, what's the point? WYRD-FM is doing fine with what it has, and swapping frequencies with a stronger stick would only hurt that station. It probably wouldn't help WYRD-FM that much.

When WORD was on AM, it needed two signals, too. It was on 950 and 1330, one for Spartanburg and one for Greenville. Ratings went up, and demos got lower when it moved to 106.3. ESPN bills well (though we'll see if that continues as there's not much in way of sports to talk about right now). It was a good move.

It may have better sound quality, but the area seems to disagree in terms of quality of programming. About half as many people listen to WGTK as 106.3 WORD FM on average. Besides Hannity, WGTK is the standard Salem lineup of talk hosts. They do okay nationally, but they typically don't inspire many on the local level. I've been kind of surprised at how Salem has run its operation in the Upstate, but most of its Christian programming has been carried elsewhere in the market for awhile. Plus, it's "Word" branding is, obviously, already being used. Salem even had to buy the rights to use the WORD-FM calls in Pittsburgh from a previous owner of 950.

For a while, WYRD-FM was also on 105.9 in Greenville. The signal wasn't needed. I think it was a place holder for the translator owner. Now, the station is airing the HD2 of 93.3, which is a religious station actually based in Anderson (I believe).

It's a smart move to go on a bunch of translators. Kent is absolutely right, "you work with what you have."

I'm sure many people listen on their smart phones or some kind of stream, too, like on Google Home or Alexa. To blow up one of their big stations like 101.1, 98.9 or 93.7 for "WORD" would be crazy. It's making money for Entercom and that's what matters. This is the same logic being used in NYC and Philly with WCBS-AM, 1010WINS and KYW. They have no FM signal, other than an HD2 or 3, and they continue to bring in money. Not going to blow up anything, especially a music station, which might not be pulling in as much money, but doesn't cost much to operate either.
