WXEM 1460 AM Buford Dead Air Programming

What is the deal with my local WXEM 1460 AM in Buford? It has been with full daytime power carrier on day and night for at least a month and half straight with dear air (no modulation). Sister stations WAOS 1600 AM in Austell and WLBA 1130 AM in Gainesville are on the air as usual with Spanish language "La Mejor" programming.

WXEM has been on and off in the past for extended periods of time in the past. Also at times with horrible modulation. However, this is just bewildering to have a station on full power 24 hours with dead air for weeks on end.

WXEM dead air

I wounder if that WXEM licence expired on 04-04-2020 might be why they have dead air ?

Without a license they shouldn't be broadcasting anything.

WXEM dead air

well when I used to go to that transmitter site in Buford and the station started as WDYX the transmitter an all solid state was all ways showing about 2500 watts and there were boards on a shelf so I'd say a good eng. they would have done well with and my last visit 2014.that said they might have renewed but its not yet showing and that could be as FCC is limited as we all are at this time .................

Getting WGSY Columbus GA. on that frequency at this location. Simulcast of Mix 94.7.

If you wanna get picky, Mix 94.7 IS the AM .. the 94.7 is a translator WGSY feeds

what the H..

dose WGSY
Columbus GA have to do with WXEM in Buford Ga being or being on the air ???

pay attention and read..... someone is hearing WGSY because WXEM is off the air

I find it kinda interesting that this station has class "B" status. I thought you had to be 250 Watts at night unless there was a folded bi-pole (which I am not sure the FCC allows anymore) or a directional pattern.

WXEM's tower appears to be about 235 feet. 1/4 wave on 1460 would be around 140-150 feet... so the tower is thereby more efficient for 1460.. so that 190 watts is probably about 250 watts or maybe slightly more

wxem

There is WLKQ fm on the top of the am tower, its a 1/4 wave stub on the feed line so that changes the highest it is

WXEM dead air

The tower is 334 feet as its support WLKQ FM Buford Ga. What is going is that a short to the tower at 1/4 wave feq to isolate the coax cable on the hot AM tower

And it appears that 235 or so feet of that 334 feet is for the AM

WXEM

Trust me the am and fm are in the same building , read up on 1/4 stub for FM the cable for the fm its insulted off the tower leg through 1/4 wave then the shield connected to the tower.

If you refer to the Wikipedia page on WXEM AM, there is a picture of the tower. There is what seems to be a three-bay FM antenna mounted on top (assuming this is WLKQ-FM). Just below that is what seems to be a VHF or UHF vertical mounted off the tower. Then about half way up the tower there seems to be another three-bay antenna. Is that FM or something else? Back-up FM?

Yep

The (2) bay Shivley 6810 is WLKQ and the outher three bay Jampro is the old one that used to be on the short tower is just left as back up its not hooked up and they call the tower site "Radio Park" it is on Radio Park Rd.

WXEM 1460 AM in Buford started modulating again in Spanish first noted on Thursday (6/4/2020). A couple months with the transmitter carrier on but not modulating 24/7! Did anybody notice? The state of AM is so pathetic.
