AM Frequency of the Week: 1260

Far northwestern suburbs of Chicago.....

Days: On a really good radio, I can usually get a veryz weak WEKZ from Monroe, WI. 1kw non-directional. Distance is about 75 miles to my west-northwest.

Nights: WEKZ drops to 19 watts and disappears. Then WSDZ from Belleville, IL (St. Louis Metro) takes over. Usually alone, or nearly so, with a good signal, WNDE from Indianapolis sometimes sneaks in underneath or even briefly on top. WNDE's night pattern is reasonably favorite in my direction, but typically gets blown out by WSDZ.

In the near north Chicago suburbs daytime on this frequency usually produces nothing audible.
At night similar to cyberdad, as I hear either WSDZ or WNDE with WSDZ usually stronger.

Oops! Typo. I meant to sat "WNDE's night pattern is reasonably FANORABLE in my direction"..... Sorry about that. Don't tell my English teacher daughter. :)

East Tennessee: Knoxville-Sevierville: Days: Religious WMCH, Church Hill TN very weakly
Night: I've heard WNXT, Portsmouth OH dominating, and a little surprised the sports programming wasn't WNDE. Just checked now (on a newsKnoxville SDR located northwest of town) and it was a hodge-podge of a bunch of signals.

Rretro/other: Dayton, OH area, a weak WNDE daytime and usually them at night

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: In the past WWJQ (now WPNW) - Zeeland, MI and WNDE Indianapolis , IN heard, but they are not common
Nightime: Mostly WNDE (Indianapolis, IN), WCCR (Cleveland, OH), WSDZ (Belleville, IL)

DX/RETRO: Some of the DX catches on this frequency in the past include WCRT (Birmingham, AL), WEKZ (Monroe, WI), WGVM (Greenville, MS), CFRN (Edmonton, AB) and couple DX Test brodcasts: WDKN (Dickson, TN), WNRK (Newark, DE)

In west Houston, during the day, I've ID'd KSML in Diboll, TX, along with KTAE in Taylor, near Austin. Around sunset, I've heard KSGF Springfield MO and KTRC in Santa Fe NM. At night, it's a jumble, with KSGF sometimes on top. I've occasionally heard WBRH in Baton Rouge LA as well.

When I lived in Perth Australia a few years ago, 6KA from Karratha, 1kw from 800 miles, was dominant most nights with Spirit, an AC/classic rock format. I moss those (relatively) clear frequencies... As I understand, 1260 is even clearer down there now, as 6KA has migrated to FM.

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: Right on the lake you can hear WPNW in Zeeland, MI which is basically directly across Lake Michigan. There are quite a few stations in Western Michigan I can hear right on the lake which fade rapidly as I go inland and this is one of them.

Nighttime: WSDZ in Belleville IL near St Louis is by far the most common. At least once I've gotten WNDE in Indianapolis but it's nearly always WSDZ.

Michael, since you're near the lake I assume you can hear WGTO Cassopolis,Mi on 910. I used to listen whenever I was near the lake. They played pretty good oldies. Sorry for the veer.

Yes, that's another one of the stations I can listen to when I'm close enough to the lakeshore. It comes in pretty well and is one of the few stations I can listen to here that plays that genre of music. But if I go more than a few blocks from the lake it disappears too. There's one road I drive on where it will go from listenable to gone when I pass a certain intersection with tall buildings. Go figure.

I've heard it several times when I'm near the lake. Good music. Where I live I can't hear it.

WGTO is owned by Larry Langford, Jr., Chicago Fire Department Spokesman, and formerly one of the last people on WMAQ before it became WSCR, and other stations. We had an extended online conversation about the Lake Shore Drive tall building AM phenomenon. Back in the 1960s, I was given a tour of Chicago Circle Campus by someone who talked about listening to the Tri City Apollos Hockey Team on a Saginaw station. Years later, I realized that it was WSGW 790. I didn't realize that they radiated the equivalent of 17 kW toward Chicago. Back in the day, you could hear WSUI over by ORD. At Night, WSUI had a null that protected WFDF, CKLY, and CBO in that direction. At Night, you got 1 kW DA-1 KGLC/KVIS on 910. It's the equivalent of 5 kW toward both coasts.

Doesn't Larry Langford also own WHFB? I didn't know he owned WGTO. When I first heard him in the 70s he was doing the news on WFYR as Lawrence Langford.

WHFB is now coowned with WIMS.

Is John Landecker now on WEFM Michigan City? If so, it's ironic how he used to make fun of "Wee Wee" FM when he was at WLS.

Tried to listen one Thanksgiving to Bob Ufer doing Michigan Football on WHFB. It was next to impossible with WJJD 3 miles away in the major lobe, overloading the receiver.

West Central Georgia:

Days: WYDE Birmingham AL 5000/41 Gospel Music - best reception in morning hours, then fades away

Nights: Mostly mush - Have heard WDKN Dickson TN 5000/18 country music, perhaps on day power
