XMfan.com to end next week

It's sad to see it go after nearly 18 years! Ryan did a fine job running it all those years. All's not lost, however, as we can gather together right here on this fine forum to get our SiriusXM info, and discuss the service.

Good idea, and an FB page has been suggested,
but Ryan requests that it NOT be named XMfan.

I tried to login and could not earlier it says access denied anyone else experiencing this issue its supposed to be up till the tenth I thought.
Try it again...I have had no problem AND people are still posting.

Sad news.

I don't do FB so I will have to remember to pop into this sub-forum from time to time.

I was just able to post over there so keep trying.

The whole site seems to be gone when I searched for it it came up with a bunch of random links. Did ryan not back up all the info on the site all those years of information and posts may just be gone?

It's gone for good. He said there would be no online archive; he's pulling the plug on the whole thing except the store, which will remain open to clear out inventory. The best we can hope for are the snapshots in time offered at web.archive.org.

Wow that is a real waste and I think irresponsible on his part.

I doubt it could have been that much but maybe frank or david can speak to this how much it costs to keep a site like this or xmfan running?

There are several costs involved:

1. Hosting. Some sites with lots of historical posts in a library can run around $200 to $500 a month, and there may be charges for bandwidth over a certain level.
2. Registration for the site name, which may include confidentiality and other features. Figure around $200 a year per domain.
3. Email accounts using the site can run a bit extra.
4. Insurance for libel, slander and other business risks. Couple of thousand.
5. Technical assistance if the site operator is not into the ISPs particular iteration of Unix.

XMfan rarely changed anything but I imagine number five could get expensive for sites that like to stay current.
