Entercom Flips AMP Boston

I think it will be Country as there is only 1 country station in LA or Urban A/C.

There had been rumors a few years ago that Cumulus was considering flipping KLOS to country. They obviously didn't do it.

The question is how long MWB will continue to own KKGO, and if a new owner would keep it country. They're obviously running it very cheaply with very limited talent.

There is only room for one country station in LA. Entercom has a lot more depth in the format around the country.

My sense is that Entercom is already dealing with a problem at KROQ. They don't need to blow up a second station right now.

They could shift KROQ to classic Alternative or classic rock or AAA.

They were "classic alternative" before. Now they're adding a lot more new music. Doesn't look like anything classic is in their future.

AAA is already being done at KCSN. That's really the best place for it.

Urban AC would compete against their co-owned KTWV.

Move towards Hot A/C or A/C or become a Country station maybe simulcast 95.1 the Frog their sister station.

And KSCN gets about a 0.2 share and 0.0 rating. That is the extent of it.

True Urban AC (with one exception at the hybrid Urban AC in San Francisco) gets 90% to 95% of its audience from African Americans. The LA Black population is declining as a percentage of the market and there is not a large enough audience base to attract accounts. And, of course, you are right... KTWV would be considerably impacted.

Country?

Don't think so - country don't pull in the demos - if anything....AMP may end up flipping to Urban AC - or any kind of AC

Target Demo?

They're not filling a format hole in Boston, so I see no reason why they'd aim to do that in LA.

The main motivation would be to find a format that makes money, regardless of whether it fills a hole.

True - and we know that 25-54 is the demo that spends the big bucks - but my question is: what is the target demo in Boston, and would the AMP in LA do the same thing if the Boston flip is a success??

I think the low ratings of KCSN may be somewhat due to its horrible signal. I drive the 405 Freeway through Long Beach daily and the signal through that area is totally unlistenable.

I remember when the KSCA manager told us, when he gave us the keys to KSCA, that the signal was so weak that the station could not even get a 2 share.

Next full book, 6.7 and #1.

It ain't the signal... it is the format.

Urban AC has a variant in LA with The Wave. It is an adapted Urban AC for a market with a very low percentage of African Americans. In most markets, Urban AC is about 90% or more Black in cume.

It appears that Boston is about 10% Latinx and 7% Black. Los Angeles is about 42% Latinx and 7% Black.

Seems like any new format that would enter the market would need to cater to an overwhelmingly diverse audience in LA in that 25-54 demo. I remember when Meruelo acquired KALI, we imagined a move where KDAY could move to 93.9. I could see a KDAY-esque format working on 97.1.

I think KAMP lost some of its thunder when KRRL and KALI entered the market. KXOL also really capitalized on the mainstreaming of reggaeton and Latin hip-hop music.

The term used by Nielsen and the US Census Bureau is "Hispanic". My family is Hispanic, and they absolutely detest the Latinx term. I don't know anyone outside extreme political activists who uses it or likes it.

The Spanish language, like all that descent from Latin, has genders. Changing "a" and "o" to "x" is not going to change the language or the heritage.

KALI has been an absolute disaster. It is getting a rating or 0.1, and has been at that level since November when it had its only 0.2 showing.

A couple thoughts:
- Sports on 97.1 would make sense *if* the major professional sports leagues are back in action *and* the station lands rights to a team actually worth having. Absent BOTH of those things, I don't think it'd be a wise move.
- How about Rock or Classic Rock on 97.1? A straight-ahead Rock format would have minimal music overlap with KROQ (given KROQ's recent changes), and would offer an opportunity to rehire Kevin & Bean, if desired. I would bring back the KLSX branding under this scenario, too. Classic Rock would give listeners who are currently "settling" for KLOS another option, and similarly, would offer an on-ramp to rehire Kevin & Bean.

Of course, if Entercom is strongly desirous of having a station that hypertargets female listeners (especially Caucasian female listeners), perhaps moving 97.1 to a Hot AC / Adult CHR sound is something that would be on the table? Instead of targetting KIIS exclusively (and doing a poor job of it), maybe slide the station between KIIS and KBIG? I envision a station that sounds musically similar to New York's 102.7 WNEW-FM. A very upbeat AC a la Chicago's 100.3 She-FM is another option.

Vanilla Soft AC would step on 94.7's toes and would be unwise.

A dark horse candidate could be Country (105.1 might fold like a cheap tent), but I cannot see that happening, and it's a move I would not recommend at all.

I, too, have noticed the steady slide at KALI. AQH share was much stronger immediately following launch. Any curiosity listening has long since vanished.
