How radio can help keep the peace

Listen, these are historic times.

I know this might go entirely against the idea of radio being a business, but it might not be a bad idea for stations to do guided meditations on air. For like 5 minutes once a day. Just end the chaos and instruct the listeners to focus on breathing in and out with some quiet music behind.

Meditation can be extremely powerful. Radio can harness that power and do some good, just for the sake of doing good.

WXPN, WMMR (Pierre would go for this) The Breeze- I'm looking at you!

The people who would be listening and partake aren’t the ones out there destroying things.
A meditation segment is a pure tune out.

Everyone, regardless of if they're protesting or not, can and would benefit from it. In times like this, perhaps radio should take a stand and do something that is beneficial regardless of if people (you think) would tune out.

"Everyone" benefitting is debatable. Those who want to benefit from it have a multitude of options to find resources at the time of their choosing. I understand breaking format for special things--Entercom I think it was did the mental health program across their platforms. But a five minute meditation program? Put that on the podcast/on-demand platform. It serves no purpose on the on-air platform.

Pierre is just finishing up a block of music for this.

I stand by my idea and think it does not matter whether it's on air or not. Any show of solidarity is important critical.

The BBC is noted for broadcasting two minutes of total silence at 11 a.m. every Nov. 11 to mark the end of World War I. Maybe there are listeners there who switch to some commercial radio station during those two minutes and don't return to the BBC afterward, but given the significance of the day, there probably aren't enough to matter. That said, five minutes of New Agey meditation music breaking up a flow of rock, CHR, urban or country music could very well annoy many more listeners than it encourages to think good thoughts. Prepare for the attacks of the Facebook and Twitter trolls, any station that tries this.

This has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ive ever heard.. it would drive away so many listeners. people who want to do that are going to be listening to the radio

Saying "a moment of silence" is just as effective. A "moment" can be as short as 5 to 10 seconds... and can be done with the sound of wind or the ocean (depending on location) so as not to be totally silent.

The issue is whether whatever you do strikes a note with listeners... makes them think, remember, reflect or meditate... At that point the intent has been achieved and if properly worded, gives a little "heart and soul" to the station.

Lmao it's a shame you think this is one of the dumbest ideas you've heard. Because you're the genius of radio and we ought to take your word as gospel. You know everything there is to know and god forbid you try something bold.

You hit the nail on the head. At least SOMETHING rather than nothing at all. Radio can really strike a note with people, but it takes bold ideas and trying something new rather than just saying nah no one's gonna listen, we'll lose money yadda yadda yadda.
