KFSD-AM Escondido

They have filed to go silent.

Exhibit 1
Description: REASON FOR REQUEST

STATION KSPA HAS BEEN OPERATING AT A LOSS FOR A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME AND THE LICENSEE DESIRES TO SUSPEND OPERATIONS TO SAVE MONEY WHILE IT SEEKS A BUYER FOR THE STATION.

This poor station has flipped formats almost as many times as Saul Levine up in L.A. They've tried almost everything: country, business talk, classical music, 1970's Top 40 (briefly), Spanish-lauguage, Korean-language -- and (for the last few years) adult standards. You'd think a playlist heavy on Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole etc. would play well in an area heavy on retirees (the station has a decent signal over Rancho Bernardo and super-upscale Rancho Santa Fe) -- plus, they were the only AM station in San Diego County playing music. But I never heard a single ad. Kinda proves what David Eduardo and other pros on this board have said for years: there's no money in targeting 65+.

The real problem is their tiny signal. Very hard to pick up outside North County. Wonder if new owners can do anything about that.

AM 1450 KFSD Escondido is on the air as of this post. I don't know when they returned; could have been several days ago since it has been a while since I scanned the San Diego AM dial.

Programming is the same adult standards format ("The Spa") as before signing off in June 2019 when they filed to go silent. No advertising, as it was a year ago.

They're keeping the license from expiring by broadcasting for at least once every 365 days.
Obviously no takers for this property from the Astor Group.

KFSD-AM has been sold for $ 125,000 to IHS MEDIA.

Steve is the President of KCZP-LP San Diego and Raul is President of KCJP-LP El Centro. There is no mention of this in the KFSD license assignment application.

And Sandy Eggo already has a catholic station, KCEO 1000... carrying Relevant Radio, which is actually somewhat engaging and lively. EWTN is as boring and dry as milktoast, preaching to the choir type.. Relevant tries to reach beyond its "choir"

Checked in on Saturday afternoon 3/27/2021 and found that the Catholic Radio format "St. John Paul Catholic Radio" was on the air on 1450 Escondido. Call letters remain intact with a sung jingle used as the top-of-hour ID. Not sure when the changeover from standards took effect since it has been at least a week since I last tuned in.

As mentioned by Frequency1 above, with one of the owners being from KCJP-LP 95.7 FM in El Centro and K227BN 93.3 FM in Brawley, it makes sense that 1450 now appears to be a simulcast of those stations.
1450 is indeed added to the website for JP2 Catholic Radio: JP2 Radio - JP2 Catholic Radio

This article dated 12/22/2020 from the Southern Cross - Diocese of San Diego newspaper:

Highlights:

-The original plan was to be on-air by mid February 2021.

-Claims that "The new station will expand its reach to an additional million potential listeners. During daytime hours, the signal will carry to most of San Diego County, excluding the South Bay. He (Raul Caro, the radio apostolate’s founder and director) hopes to acquire an affiliate station in downtown San Diego in late spring to further expand the coverage area."

-(Raul) "Caro said that his radio operation prides itself on being independent, broadcasting curated content from three Catholic radio networks – EWTN, Ave Maria and Relevant Radio – picking what he believes to be “the best blend” of programming. Ultimately, he would like to establish a physical studio in San Diego County and is seeking community partners to produce San Diego-specific content."

-"Steve Beuerle, who with Caro serves as co-director of IHS Media, the nonprofit that was formed to purchase the San Diego-based radio station, agreed that the station will be “much more local” and “much more live.”"

I noticed last Friday (March 19th), it was still playing Frank Sinatra and the “Spa Sound.” When I checked the next day on Saturday, March 20th, it was airing the new religious format. Too bad, I will miss hearing the adult standards!
