Ted Tucker moves 103.7 to 104.5

Ted Tucker's Cochise Broadcasting has moved its 103.7 station to 104.5 and it is presently on the air playing soft rock oldies. New station is licensed to Vail and appears to be on the air 24/7 unlike 103.7 which was hardly ever on the air. 104.5, according to the FCC, transmits from a tower about 125 feet above ground and located just north of I-10 near Vail. Power is just 300 watts. One wonders why 104.5 is better than 103.7 and whether Tucker will keep 103.7. I have no problem receiving 104.5 on my car radio on the east side of Tucson but it is very weak on my portable radio in my house. My best guess is that this facility will be upgraded before any attempt is made to sell it. Another question is what becomes of 98.5 which also is licensed to Vail.
 
I know KRDX is moving from 98.5fm to 103.7fm when KXZK moving to 104.5 frequency. Since KRDX is moving out of 98.5 frequency. I wonder if KOHT 98.3 can upgrade their signal from Class A to Class C3 or Class C2 to cover southeast area of Tucson. KRDX 98.5 FM signal is interfering with KOHT 98.3 FM signal.
 
Time to check/change presets once again.... :D

I wish Tucker would move KTBX Tubac from 98.1, as 98.3 KOHT sometimes interferes with that signal as well.

Well...once you get south of Martinez Hill, 98.1 comes in just fine.
 
If you drive around Tucson you'll quickly discover that 104.5 has a very weak signal in most of the metro area. There's no question that this station must be upgraded before it can become competitive in the market. Probably a major reason for the low power is that it is on the second adjacent of 104.1. Might be interesting to delve into how Tucker managed to establish a claim to 104.5. 98.1 in Tubac also needs to be upgraded. Typically it takes Tucker and associates years to accomplish such things. Meanwhile radio stations are losing value and nobody is getting any younger.

He filed for it and proved it could fit. that simple
 
I recently tried to satisfy my curiosity as to where the tower was for the new station on 104.5. After driving around the remote area with dirt roads I think that I found it. This is the only broadcasting station I know of that transmits from an antenna mounted on a cellular telephone tower. I took three photos and you can find them here: http://www.cavefm.com/hiddencave/
I believe that the 104.5 antenna is mounted a few feet down from the top of the tower. It is only one element and is supposed to be directional. The station is pretty weak in most parts of Tucson. I think that their playlist is less than 100 songs. Could be that the audio comes from a computer located inside the telephone company's building.
In another recent development the hip-hop oldies station on 97.5 has upped their power from 6,000 watts to 25,000. They transmit from a 500 foot tower near the Ina Road freeway interchange. Appropriately the installation is on land adjacent to a sewage treatment plant.

CP Data shows non directional
 
104.5 is not directional. 97.5 is directional with a null to the south mostly to protect a co-channel station in Nogales, Sonora.
