99.5 The Ranch

Picking up this one at home, running classic country. Their web page identifies it as the return of KFXY-LP in far east Mesa, which had been on 99.1 but had been silent for quite some time. The FCC CDBS database still shows it as active on 99.1 running 2 watts on Usery Mountain, when (IIRC) they had been located near 104th St. and Brown Rd. in their last incarnation.

What in the name of Hank Williams is going on here? Unless the CDBS database is out of date, it sounds like they're operating as a pirate.

Look at fccinfo.com they have a license for 99.5 which dates to 2020... the 99.1 license is from 2015.. for some reason its still in the database

Yes, I see that. But why does the FCC file number for both 99.5 and 105.1 start with "BLANK?" Is that legit?

That's because those applications were made in the Licensing and Management System. In LMS, as opposed to CDBS, applications are identified only by a numerical designation.

In FCCdata and the REC data ecosystem, there are abbreviations (e.g. REN-0000116019 and L2C-0000116047), but that's a REC style decision (and a good one).

Here's an interesting document on the subject, dated June 3, 2020. This has to be the biggest pile of BS I've ever read from the FCC. There are more footnotes than actual text. Why should the owner of KBSZ give a flying fig what KFXY does, unless there is mutual interference between the two stations. At least from this listener's standpoint, there isn't.

This looks like the culmination of a pissing contest between two borderline-irrelevant stations than anything else.

Also, is this new LPFM classic country station only broadcasting from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM? A very interesting turn of events for KFXY-LPFM!

Sounds like the commercial station simply objected to the lpfm allegedly not conforming to broadcast law (i havent read in detail, but thats what it looks like)

I think the 7am to 3pm is when the station has DJ's and the rest of the time its automated?

I'll have to look at posts from last year, but IIRC, there was reported bad blood between the owners of the two stations.

The Classic Country format runs from 7 AM to 3 PM on-air, with a more current (1990s and later) format running the rest of the day. They're on 24/7.

There's some bad blood between the operator of KFXY-LP and the man who runs the John Low AM's in Apache Junction. It all stems from when that person (Len Novin) operated the LPFM. Just like the bad blood between Low himself and Vic Michael.

It seems that Low is using his broadcast outlets to pick fights against those he doesn't like or claim is "hurting his business."

One is playing a mix of music from Come and get your Love to Suzy-Q to Rebel Yell. Haven’t heard a station identifier yet.
The other is KIIM out of Tucson. I can’t receive any Tucson FMs here on my portable except as the faintest of faints buried by fuzz, but KIIM comes in just fine depending upon how the mast and radio are oriented.

The 99.5 on the west side might be KRPH in Morristown (or its Wittman booster signal). They've been testing on and off with classic rock.

Licensee is Deportes Y Musica Comunicaciones LLC, so go figure. They've got a Covid 19 Silent STA that gives them until 4/02/21 to get on the air. But that station has had Silent STA's going back to 2011. Any testing now is probably at the request of a potential buyer. Good luck!

The Ranch would be a rarity anywhere west of Higley Rd. It plays classic country during the day, but mainly covers east Mesa and Apache Jct.

But one thing I forgot is that they do have a direct country music competitor in Apache Jct: KIKO 102.9/1340, which is commercial and has a bit better signal from Usery Mountain, although it's highly directional to the SW, co-located with KBSZ 97.3/1260. The AMs also share the same tower from the south side of AJ.

KRPH had spent six or seven years "simulcasting" KLAX in Los Angeles. Then, they lost their tower site and now shares one with Univision's KHOV. I think Univision won't allow them to simulcast KLAX, a competitor of theirs in the L.A. market, thanks to the tower lease, so they're running a classic rock loop ever so often.

I can't pick up The Ranch past Power on the 202 heading East, but I can pick them up great West of Higley on the Red Mountain 202. I can hear them till Mesa Riverview and then up to Talking Stick Resort.
