Petty Channel Debuts New Music

The Tom Petty channel 31 on SiriusXM debuted a previously-unreleased demo this week from a forthcoming album:

June 26, 2020—The Petty Family today releases Tom’s 8 track demo of his classic song “You Don’t Know How It Feels” which will be part of a forthcoming Wildflowers project on Warner Records. Listen here.

The home recording premiered on Tom Petty Radio (channel 31) on SiriusXM yesterday, along with an exclusive interview with Adria Petty about the release.

The demo, recorded in his home studio, is stunning and intimate. The song, well known for the lyric “Let’s Get To The Point, and Let’s Roll Another Joint” has slightly different lyrics. It shows an insight to his writing process and introduces a line from another favorite Wildflowers track “Crawling Back To You” stating, “most things I worry about never happen anyway”.

A humorous, animated video created and directed by Ben “Blaze” Brooks and Aaron Hymes is also being released today. Watch here.
“The family and the band are in a joyful process of discovering the Wildflowers sessions and demos and wanted to share a tiny bit of that with the fans today,” adds Adria Petty on behalf of the Petty Family.

“You Don’t Know How It Feels” was first released in November of 1994, on Petty’s Wildflowers album.

More information and specific details to come soon on the upcoming release.

I don't see anything, nor will the radio listeners.

Have you or anyone else ever seen numbers on SiriusXM's artist-branded channels, or has corporate succeeded in preventing any leaks? I know SXM is paid for the bandwidth these channels command, but do they really attract more ears than the in-house music channels? Is there enough upside in the form of fanboys (and fangirls) of acts like Petty, Pearl Jam, Phish, etc. getting subscriptions just to listen to their faves 24/7 to make up for the loss of subscribers who might lose their in-house music faves when these channels are introduced?

Sorry, that was a press release and I didn't include the links. Here is the link to the video:

I don't know if they attract more ears, but it's a branding thing where artists can control the presentation of their music. They get a nice press release and they tell their fans where they can get new music. It's more for the fans than casual reach. The upside is Sirius gets paid, which is not the case for other non-commercial music channels. They do polls of subscribers, and I'm sure that plays a part in deciding which channels are expendable.

I have been polled twice, but not recently. I don't remember the exact details, but they asked for the channels I most listen to. That would not necessarily be accurate, since some listeners may list niche channels they like, which they feel might be removed, and not bother listing channels considered safe. The on-line streaming numbers would provide some data also, but the different nature of the competition may skew the numbers there.

That makes me wonder about the comparative numbers of subscribers who stream vs. listen off satellite. A part of me thinks the majority of listening is done in the car via satellite, but that may change as subscribers become aware of the availability of Sirius online. Of course online streaming is quite a bit cheaper than satellite delivery.
