WIRJ (Humboldt, TN)

At one time Grace had plans to bring 1500 in Trenton back on and simulcast Southern Gospel with 1190 in Humboldt, which apparently never happened and probably never will. It's definitely sad that someone couldn't have bought these stations together and get an FM translator for them somehow.

Unlike WCTA and WIRJ, WJPJ added an FM translator several years ago at 99.9.

Also, I just checked the FCC records, and WIRJ filed for license renewal at the end of April, 2020. WPOT also filed for license renewal back in March, 2020.

I can see where Grace may eventually do something with WPOT. But why should WIRJ be allowed to renew their license if they aren;t going to come backon the air any time soon? That also applies to WCTA if they actually do anything to renew their license. They should be required to get the stations back on the air, sell to someone who will get them back on the air, or turn in their license and stay silent permanently.

WCTA in Alamo has been on more in the last few years than WIRJ has been, and that's not saying much!

WIRJ shouldn't receive a renewed license. However, they most likely will, as the FCC assumes the station has been operating. The license renewal is only $200, and is good for eight years. So, we can probably look forward to another eight years of silence!

Someone has got to pay that $200. Where is the money going to come from?

This company?
http://1tennessee.net/about-us

I'm betting the john warmath that is president of it is the son of the guy who was past president of the company

I said this back in 2008 when the station was on, as I wondered about their audio source:

"When I last heard them, they were playing a country/western format. About every three or so songs, there was a quick tag about getting the Stringray (or whatever service it was) app for your music. WIRJ is owned by the Warmath family, who also owns the cable television and internet company in Humboldt known as Infostructure/Click1. I don't know the provider for their cable music channels, but wouldn't if be interesting if it was the same, and they simply had a cable set-top box plugged in to feed the audio for WIRJ."

At the time, 1Tennessee was named Infostructure/Click 1.

WIRJ's license was renewed by the FCC Thursday 7/16/20. Also, WPOT's license was renewed Thursday 7/16/20.

I can see how WPOT can get a license renewal if Grace does what they claim about getting it back on the air. But how and why should WIRJ be renewed considering they've been silent for years? I thought that when a station went silent for too long that they lost the license. Or does the FCC not know or care?

You can be up to a year off the air with no issue, but you have to notify. Over a year, if there is a difficulty such as lost a transmitter site and working on permits for a new one, submitting proof of progress will keep the license alive.

As I mentioned previously in another thread, there was a CA station that lost its site due to flooding. The government authority prohibited any future construction in the zone so the station had to move. They put up with NIMBY issues, the need for something like 11 different permits, from FAA to the township, environmental impact statements, and other stuff. It took nearly 4 years to rebuild.

But the station kept the FCC up to date with the progress of all applications, and they understood that the licensee was doing everything it could in an area where there were few available sites and lots of impediments.

As I said before, this makes no sense, unless Grace also has an option on WIRJ. Like I also said earlier, this is throwing good money after bad. Apparently, these two stations' licenses were jointly renewed, despite (apparently) having different ownership. Was this some sort of package deal involving these two stations?

I don't think WPOT and WIRJ are related in any way. The licenses just happened to be renewed the same day. My point was that WIRJ probably shouldn't have been renewed, since the station has been off for very extended periods of time for no reason.

no one said theyre related, just that grace could have an option (to buy) WIRJ.. but i doubt that.. grace has been sellign stuff off

I can't see how Grace could do anything with WIRJ or WPOT unless they can get FM translators for them, which would probably have to involve buying an existing one and moving them in. But what are the chances of being able to do that? Otherwise what's the point?

Humboldt's other AM station, WJPJ 1190 AM, was able to move in a translator from Clarksburg, TN. W260BA at 99.9 FM was acquired by Grace Broadcasting from Heartland Ministries in KY several years ago.

This was my thinking, as well. It didn't strike me as just coincidence that both would renew on the same day. Apparently, John Warmath has money to burn.

In this day and age, an AM station MUST have at least ONE other way to reach their listeners, whether it is with streaming, an FM translator, or just asking Alexa to play WIRJ. (I haven't tried that.) I still listen to AM stations, but not directly through their AM broadcasts, but rather, through one of the other sources that I have just suggested here. It is the only way that AM radio can survive.

Grace changed 93.1 in Bells/Jackson from Southern Gospel to news/talk (Like the Jackson area needed another one of them on FM ) and bought 1190 in Humboldt and the 99.9 translator to move SG there, and I was told that there were similar plans for 1500 in Trenton, but that's been over a year ago. I think that they realized that the SG audience was getting smaller so they moved to AM and the translator. I don't know if that will eventually happen with 1500 or not.

Back in 2013, WTNE 1500 was branded as "1500 Memories" with a Southern Gospel format. WTNE became WPOT in October, 2014. WPOT is licensed for 250 watts day and 6 watts night with a 100 foot tower.

The name 1500 Memories sounded like it should have been an easy listening format, which I think it was at one time, and that might have been the station's name at that time as well.
