LA April Ratings - KFI Is Back to #1!

55 songs out of 340 played last 7 days were from the 70's.

48 songs were from the 90's.

Amazing that with three decades of music with which to work, they can only find 340 songs to play in a week.

It's amazing how radio can be free and yet still not worth it. No worries though, just cue up "Walking on Sunshine" again and just go with the flow.

Amazing is the fact that since they did that, they have had the best 25-54 numbers in decades.

Your preferences are not the same as the nearly 3 million listeners KRTH has each week.

KNX has dropped because they are left-leaning. KNX may be a news format, but they have a midday show called KNX In-Depth that is also replayed in the evening, and while they have all types of guests - the majority are on the left - as well as the perspectives of the hosts. They often Trump shade. AM Talk has mostly conservative, right of center listeners. One of the supposed impartial anchors, Jan Stevens, used to even provide an extra sentence of commentary in her reports - someone must have said something because she has stopped doing that. KNX's drop has nothing to do with the fact that they are primarily a ticker news station - it's their orientation.

Huh? Do you know that KNX is in Los Angeles? Do you know how the majority of people in LA vote? How is KEIB doing in the ratings?

BTW In Depth airs at times of day when listening to news radio is normally low, so I doubt it affected the ratings one bit. If it did, it would be canceled.

KNX “In-Depth” is one of the main reasons I don’t like listening to KNX much these days. For an all-news station, they sure do have a lot of commentary and even though “In-Depth” only airs two hours out of the day at 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM, I always seem to catch it when I tune to KNX.

I would agree, KNX “In-Depth” is a program that has an obvious anti-Trump, liberal slant which I don’t really want to hear from an all-news station. I want the facts, no slant or commentary, with traffic and weather every 10 minutes on the 5’s. What is surprising is that other former CBS all-news stations like WBBM in Chicago and KCBS in San Francisco, arguably the most liberal city in the country, don’t have a similar commentary program. They stick to news throughout the day with WBBM having a “Noon Business Hour.” Notably, both WBBM and KCBS do much better in their respective markets than KNX with both ranking #1 or close to it. Personally, I wish KNX would just stick to news, traffic and weather and leave the commentary out of it.

KEIB, KRLA, KFI, & KABC all lean conservative - KFI the least of them but a bunch of their hosts definitely lean right - and they are all in LA. Also, as I mentioned previously, one of the anchors on KNX would insert her bias throughout the day; In-Depth is not the only Left leaning part of the lineup. The general left orientation is pervasive.

The lukewarm ratings at KNX pre-date In Depth. LA is a city where the all news format is not a big ratings getter. LA was once able to support two all news stations. Not any more. As for the show, it's not really a commentary show. It's more of an interview show. When they interview LA politicians, such as the mayor, it's not going to be pro-Trump. When they interview a basketball player talking about his charity, it's not going to be pro-Trump. That's how it is. If that's the kind of show you want, you're living in the wrong town. By the same token, if they see that this one-hour show is bringing down the overall ratings of the station, they'll drop it. There is no emotional attachment to any political cause. They just want to make money.

The left orientation pervades KNX - not just that show. It is true that ticker news is not as popular as the talk format - however, AM talk radio listeners are mostly conservative in their orientation.

To attribute the station's ratings to some perceived political bias is subjective and has no basis in fact.

KEIB has a lot of competition. KNX has the news game to itself. Add the ratings of all conservative talkers and compare them to KNX if that is the point you want to make.

I was just making an observation. Any station that tries to program to me will be last in the ratings and lose money like a bad day trader. Radio is (unfortunately) for mass market consumption and is beholden to what the market wants; it programs to the lowest common denominator. I am not the lowest common denominator.

We seem to find that Top 20 Sunbelt markets just don't sustain all-news.

Atlanta and Houston have tried recently. Dallas and Houston are kind of hybrids, with some talk mixed in. LA has declined with current news shares less than half of what the two stations had 20 years ago. Phoenix can't do it, and neither can Miami or San Diego.

It programs to the demo that it can sell. You used to be in that demo, and then you moved out. Your taste hasn't really changed.

Those are aren't in the lowest common denominator listen to KCRW. And they're very happy.
