Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie Daniels dies at 83

A terrible loss to country music and to the music industry altogether. Him and Kenny Rogers are fiddling it up in heaven. May he RIP and thank you for the memories. :-(

Three of his great Gospel tunes, that I proudly play on Jesus Radio Selma.

Loved his voice.

One of kind.

Will be missed.

When Charlie Daniels Band began releasing records under the name, country wouldn't touch him. His top 40 debut, per my memory was Uneasy Rider. Long Haired Country Boy was aired on the album rock stations where I lived. It only took until 1979 for him to gain country radio airplay with The Devil Went Down To Georgia.

Working in a record store, a group of stores got to enjoy an evening of food, drink and Charlie Daniels playing for us...a tiny crowd of less 100 including all the label execs in attendance. It was a heck of a concert. I bet they played 3 hours with a short break in the middle. What impressed me was he took time to speak to everyone one-on-one.

Of course they wouldn't! He was a long haired country boy! They didn't like Willie for the same reason. Long haired pot smoking country boys were the opposite of what Nashville was trying to sell, with Jim Reeves and Eddie Arnold. Willie had to leave Nashville and go to Texas to find success. He brought Waylon with him. The outlaw movement opened the door to what Charlie was doing. What made Charlie acceptable was Mickey Gilley giving him a shot in Urban Cowboy. That made it OK.

I'm not sure of the timing but I think Charlie Daniels did become more of a committed Christian in his later years.

Just announced that his Volunteer Jam festival, scheduled for February 2021, will take place as a tribute show:

The Volunteer Jam was originally schedule for September, then moved to February. It raises money for military veterans.

Here's the press release:

Nashville, Tenn. (July 31, 2020) — Today, David Corlew and Associates announced next year's Volunteer Jam will go on as scheduled and serve as a tribute concert to the late Charlie Daniels. The 2021 Volunteer Jam: A Musical Salute to Charlie Daniels will take place Monday, February 22, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. C/T at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.

Hazel Daniels, Daniels' wife of 55 years, believes her husband would be thrilled.

“I am forever grateful for all of the love and support Charlie Jr. and I have received since Charlie’s passing," says Hazel. "Charlie would be excited and extremely proud that his Volunteer Jam would continue. I want to express my sincere thanks to the artists paying tribute to Charlie.”
