When you look at the other networks, you can see why Westwood One struggled. CBS, ABC, & Fox are extensions of the TV networks and their expenses are folded into a department where radio is cheap. At Salem, the in-house network gives them more time to sell and they don't have to worry about listeners complaining about the news coming from an MSM source. The WWO news operation is the last vestige of both the Mutual Broadcasting System and NBC Radio Network. While they had access to CNN audio, they also had their team of Washington correspondents and producers that not only supported the newscasts but the "America in the Morning" and "First Light" morning shows. If those shows are going away, that creates an opportunity as they had really good clearances in the 5a hour.
