CNBC announced on Wednesday that former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith is joining the network to host a one-hour evening news program on weekdays at 7 p.m. ET.

The newscast, which will be called “The News with Shepard Smith,” is set to launch in the fall. Smith’s title will be chief general news anchor and chief breaking general news anchor.

Smith joins CNBC after spending 23 years at Fox News Channel, where he anchored “Shepard Smith Reporting,” “The Fox Report” and “Studio B.” He also served as chief news anchor of the network and managing editor of the breaking news division.

Agreed. Some predicted him to go directly to MSNBC, but this makes more sense in a political year compounded with the pandemic. Gives both cables flexibility plus another nbc contributor if needed.

I thought that Shepard Smith was going to CNN or MSNBC I didn't see CNBC.

Probably contract issues, but they want him on board for sure. As the election approaches he will likely be a major commentator for all of NBC's platforms. Definitely a good hire.

Could it be that NBC was spooked by its experience with Megyn Kelly, who, being so closely associated with Fox, never achieved a comfort level with the NBC audience? Putting Smith on CNBC, which is not overtly political, might be a way to ease him into an eventual role on NBC or even MSNBC.

Is CNBC under full NBC ownership? I thought there was a partnership there much like MSNBC was.

In reading this story, it sounds as though his show will be more similar to what Brian Williams does at 11PM. Less opinion, more news.

The Tucker Carlson feud with Shepard Smith was revived tonight:

With Trump gone, they really have nothing to talk about any more. So they have to invent stuff.
