Allegations Toxic Work Culture at the Ellen Show

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/krystieyandoli/ellen-employees-allege-toxic-workplace-culture

Buzzfeed examines the allegations against the management surrounding Ellen DeGeneres that lead to a Toxic Work Culture.

Ellen DeGeneres has built her worldwide, multimillion-dollar brand on the motto “be kind,” with lavish giveaways and acts of charity. But behind the scenes, current and former employees on her leading daytime show say they faced racism, fear, and intimidation.

“That ‘be kind’ bullshit only happens when the cameras are on. It’s all for show,” one former employee told BuzzFeed News. “I know they give money to people and help them out, but it’s for show.”

BuzzFeed News spoke to one current and 10 former employees on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, fearing retribution from the award-winning NBC daytime talk show and others in the entertainment industry. They said they were fired after taking medical leave or bereavement days to attend family funerals. One employee, who claims she was fed up with comments about her race, essentially walked off the job. Others said they were also instructed by their direct managers to not speak to DeGeneres if they saw her around the office.

Most of the former employees blamed executive producers and other senior managers for the day-to-day toxicity, but one former employee said that, ultimately, it’s Ellen’s name on the show and “she really needs to take more responsibility” for the workplace environment.

Crew members from Ellen DeGeneres’ long-running daytime talk show are distressed and outraged over their treatment from top producers amid the coronavirus pandemic, numerous insiders affiliated with the series told Variety.

The core stage crew for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” consisting of more than 30 employees, received no written communication about the status of their working hours, pay, or inquiries about their mental and physical health from producers for over a month, said two sources, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity. Higher-ups in production would occasionally answer phone calls but reveal little, added one of the sources. The crew was further incensed by the show’s recent hire of an outside, non-union tech company to help DeGeneres tape remotely from her home in California.

Some of this is racial allegations to Health care issues at Ellen. Also Allegations of Special Treatment Ellen gives to some members of her management. The question comes down to how will Warner Brothers the owners of the Ellen Show respond to the allegations as seen by Buzzfeed and Variety.

There is considerable talk around "Hollywood" (a term that is more about an industry than about geography) that much of the protesting has been generated by the unions since the off-site shows are being independently and, more significantly, non-union produced.

Sure when California residents talk about the Film, TV and App broadcasting operations in Los Angeles area we tend to say the studios are near the CA-134 freeway, Culver City and Century City. Hollywood to California residents usually mean a tourist district within the City of Los Angeles.

Yes it's true some parts of the Filming industry have move out of Los Angeles and New York due to costs cutting at studios and they moved to Canada, I seen Nashville and Atlanta mentioned as alternative places for the Film industry within the USA though to cut studio expenses though.

Back to this thread as in the allegations seen here the Broadcasting industry is still reeling from the fallout of both the Metoo Movement and Racism within the industry though as seen in this thread.

As seen in the BuzzFeed and Variety articles on the management surrounding Ellen Degeneres. They are framing the Management as an Arthur Godfrey type person here.

Update Warner Media announces an investigation over toxic workplace surrounding the management of the Ellen show

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” has become the subject of an internal investigation by WarnerMedia following numerous accounts of workplace problems on the long-running daytime series, Variety has learned.

Executives from show producer Telepictures and distributor Warner Bros. Television sent a memo to staffers last week saying they have engaged WBTV-owner WarnerMedia’s employee relations group and a third party firm, who will interview current and former staffers about their experiences on set, said sources.

A Warner Bros. Television spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. A rep for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

The memo comes on the heels of recent unflattering reports about working conditions at the show. In April, Variety reported on the treatment of legacy crew members during the coronavirus lockdown. In mid-July, BuzzFeed published a report alleging racism and intimidation on the show. The memo came from the desks of Telepictures executive vice president Donna Redier Linsk and WBTV vice president of human resources Donna Hancock Husband.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘s host, Ellen DeGeneres, and studio, Warner Bros., have spoken out about the recent complaints against the workplace environment on the popular daytime syndicated talk show.

In a statement on behalf of WB and DeGeneres, the studio confirmed that it has conducted an internal inquiry, interviewing current and former Ellen employees about their experience following a recent BuzzFeed report alleging a toxic work culture on the show.

“Though not all of the allegations were corroborated, we are disappointed that the primary findings of the investigation indicated some deficiencies related to the show’s day-to-day management,” the statement said. “We have identified several staffing changes, along with appropriate measures to address the issues that have been raised, and are taking the first steps to implement them. Warner Bros. and Ellen DeGeneres are all committed to ensuring a workplace based on respect and inclusion. We are confident this course of action will lead us to the right way forward for the show.”

Here is a statement from WarnerMedia over the allegations of the toxic workplace.

Update there is now allegations of Sexual Harassment and Misconduct at the Ellen Show involving some of the management surrounding Ellen Degeneres.

Being asked to join the control room inside The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a coveted spot in Hollywood, but according to dozens of men and women who work behind the scenes, the office is a place where sexual harassment and misconduct by top executive producers runs rampant.

One ex-employee said head writer and executive producer Kevin Leman asked him if he could give him a hand job or perform oral sex in a bathroom at a company party in 2013. Another said they separately saw Leman grab a production assistant’s penis.

In May 2017, another former employee also said she saw Leman grope a production assistant in a car and kiss his neck.

Nearly a dozen former employees, who range from longtime, senior-level employees to production assistants, said it was also common for Leman to make sexually explicit comments in the office, like pointing out male colleagues’ bulges in their crotches, or ask them questions like, “Are you a top or a bottom?”

“It’s masked in sarcasm, but it’s not sarcasm,” a former employee said.

Many of his targets, employees added, were lower-level and younger employees who felt they lacked any power to speak up.

Hedda Muskat, who worked on the syndicated talk show in its early days in 2003 and 2004, told The Wrap that the comedian allowed a “culture of fear” from the show’s beginning. Muskat, who won two Daytime Emmy Awards for her work on the show, said she had “never seen” such “toxic host” behavior.
One incident involving executive producer Ed Glavin showed the tone of the workplace, Muskat said. Glavin is one of three show executives who have been accused of sexual misconduct.

Muskat claimed Glavin started screaming at a staffer and “went off on them” in a meeting. She said she expected DeGeneres to do something, but instead the host giggled.

“She crossed her legs up on the chair and she said, ‘Well, I guess every production needs their dog,’” Muskat said. “And from then we knew. Ed was going to be the barking dog — her dog. You could just see everybody’s faces go stiff. We’re professionals; we’re adults. We don’t need a dog to get us to do our jobs.”

“Ed was a bully, but he worked for Ellen,” Muskat said. “It was her show.”

It turns out Ellen let some members of her management act as loose cannons in the office that lead to the Toxic Office environment at the Ellen Show. Yes Ellen and upper Warner Brothers Television management are accused of letting the Toxic environment take place the way it did after multiple whistleblowers came forward to Variety and Buzzfeed.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...llied-11-year-old-boy-calling-fat-stupid.html

Here is a new allegation Ellen DeGeneres is accused of directly bullying and harassing an accuser in the 1970's.

Ellen DeGeneres bullied an 11-year-old boy, calling him 'fat' and 'stupid'; made fun of his clothes and 'took pleasure' in his distress, the now grown victim claims.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMailTV, Ben Gravolet said the under fire TV host worked for his mother's recruitment agency when he was a child, and claimed Ellen – then aged about 20 – would regularly subject him to biting, mean insults.

'I would dread going to [my mom's] office to see her after school or on a day if I was sick and Ellen was there,' Gravolet said. 'She would criticize my weight. I would try to do homework in the office, she'd call me stupid, she'd call me fat. She would criticize my clothes.

'I was just a boy and this was a grown woman who took pleasure in seeing me become visibly upset.

'I don't think there's any excuse for it. I was a defenseless kid. What could I have told her back?

Your Name is on the Marque

I'm a mid-level manager. Twice a year, my boss holds 'skip-level' meetings with my team. I tell them to be honest and say whatever you want. My boss has several layer above him to the CEO.

My point: when you're name is on the checks, you need to meet with almost everyone annually at a minimum. Someone would've been bold enough to tell Ellen everything.
