AM Frequency of the week: 1350

Crystal Lake, IL.....

Days: 1350 here is mostly blank. On rare occasions in winter I can hear a very weak WPDR from Portage, WI. That's 1kw non-directional from about 120 miles northwest of me. I presume via daytime skywave.

Nights: Of late, 1350 has usually been WIOU from Kokomo, IN. Signal is usually good, albeit prone to fading. I'm wondering if they're running their 5kw non-directional day pattern at night. Although the 1kw night pattern isn't completely unfavorable in my direction.

Retro: 1350 historically has been relatively uncrowded at my location. Most likely to rise to the top had been WXCL/WOAM from Peoria. 1kw) But they've now shut down, I've also heard KRNT from Des Moines (5kw) and CKDO from Oshawa, ON, before they moved to 1580 (10kw). Once in the '70s or early 80s I heard WSLR from Akron, OH (now WARF) apparently when their DA was out of whack, (5kw).

In the near north Chicago suburbs 1350 is pretty quiet in the daytime don't hear much of anything.
At night I generally hear WIOU. In the past I've heard KRNT from time to time.

East Tennessee: days-a weak WZGM, business radio in Black Mountain (Asheville) NC. Occasional sunset or winter daytime skip: WARF, Akron.

Night: Last I checked (via the nearby Oak Ridge/Knoxville SDR), it was a solid WARF dominating

Retro/other: I worked at a 1350, which was WCSM in Celina, Ohio. It had and still has a 4 tower directional that runs north and east, mulling the 1350 in Kokomo, and 1340s in Muncie and Springfield. When I worked there in the 80s, I ran a DX test with it, and most reception was east and northeast, into Ontario, New York and even under WSLR in the Akron area (someone sent a recording).

Otherwise, in any occasion where WCSM was off the air in the daytime, I got WIOU. Nighttime was usually WSLR, Akron but not particularly strong. I also received WXCL on occasion. I had sunset reception of WCHI, Chillcothe (now operating on temporary facilities, by the way.)

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: There's a weak WIOU in Kokomo, IN. The only Kokomo station I've identified actually.

Nighttime: Sometimes there's still a weak WIOU, but more likely would be the ESPN station KRNT in Des Moines.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: Lately it's been WQOG406 TIS from Park Ridge, IL with weak signal. In the past WIOU Kokomo, IN would make it occasionally.
Nightime: usually WOAM Peopria, IL, KRNT Des Moines, IA

DX/RETRO: Some notable DX include KCAR (Clarksville, TX), WRWH (Cleveland, GA), WBLT (Bedford, VA), WSMB (New Orleans, LA), WYLS (York, AL), WNVA (Norton, VA), CKAR (Oshawa, ON) and few others.

Two stations trading off. Didn't hear call signs, but pretty sure one is KPWK from San Bernardino. Fox Sports. The other is probably KLHC in Bakersfield. It has a Punjabi format. Couldn't understand a word they were saying, and it wasn't Spanish.

There were others in the background, which has me interested. Neither Arizona nor Nevada has a station on 1350. Nothing from Baja California, either.

West Central Georgia:

1350 am is my Cleveland frequency. I often hear WRWH Cleveland Ga and WARF Akron/Cleveland OH on this frequency.

Days: Weak WBML Warner Robins/Macon GA 15000/500 Oldies under slop from local WOKS Columbus GA on 1340

Nights: Mix of WRWH Cleveland GA 1000/93 News/Talk (on day power?), WARF Akron/Cleveland OH 5000 Sports "The Gambler" and WWWL New Orleans 5000 Urban Oldies

Mornings: Good signal from WZGM Black Mountain/Asheville NC 10000/56 Business Talk

An impressive list, as usual from you. Two of those stations have moved from 1350. WYLS has moved to 670 as a daytimer with 5kw and a nice signal. I used to make the run from Birmingham, AL to Jackson, MS 2 or 3 times a year, and WYLS was good for about 60 miles in each direction on I-20 in an area with generally poor ground conductivity.

And as you may already know, CKAR became CKDO. Which ultimately moved to 1580.. The CKAR call letters were apparently a reference to the large General Motors plant in Oshawa. I used to pass by both the GM plant and the CKDO towers on the route bettwen Toronto and either Montreal or Ottawa. Those towers are on a narrow strip of land between Lake Ontario and the 401 freeway,

In west Houston, in the daytime I sometimes hear KXTN San Antonio with Tejano music and KCOX in Jasper TX with conservative talk. At sunset, those two are usually mixing it up with WWWL in New Orleans. Nights are a jumble of those 3 and unidentified others.
