KSIX (1230 AM) Corpus Christi- Astros

With the baseball season finally beginning, KSIX in Corpus Christi will begin their 59th consecutive season of Houston Astros baseball. Since the very first pitch of the Houston franchise in 1962 South Texans have been tuning to 1230 AM for their baseball fix. As former Astros broadcaster Milo Hamilton would say....... "That might not be a record, but it's definitely above average"

I listened to the HOU-KC exhibition game on KSIX last week at work. I work about 90 miles up the coast. Signal was better than radio-locator gives the station credit for.

well yeah, radio locator doesnt take the water into account for coverage

Salt water signal paths, even when hugging the coast, can greatly enhance reception. I was in the Outer Banks of North Carolina earlier this year, and was amazed at how well I could hear WFAN, WABC, and WCBS out of NYC in the middle of the day, some 340 miles away. I had expected weak signals, but all three were quite good at high noon.

Good for KSIX's extra AM coverage. Especially since KSIX has 2 FM translators in exact same location broadcasting it, one on 95.1 and one on 103.3. Both are downtown Corpus, and KSIX's last FM translator on 96.1 has been off every time I've been to the area in the past couple of years... I would turn on 96.1 and turn off 103.3 to extend KSIX's FM signal...

How are the translators' coverage in Port Lavaca?

Non-existent.

You’ll get KIOX from Edna on 96-1, and a fight between KNDE and KMYO on 95-1.

Translators will not travel 82 miles, not on a consistent basis, anyway.

The furthest I’ve heard a translator travel with clarity and consistency is Austin’s K246BD 97-1, which boomed in like a local in San Marcos, and could be heard with little to no static in New Braunfels. At least it did back in 2011, I haven’t been back to test it recently.

The farthest ive ever heard a translator during eskip was 1250 miles. Rapid City, SD to central Pennsylvania

That little translator could make it all the way to the US-290 railroad crossing in Giddings before KTHT would take over. The station was faint at that point, but still listenable. Impressive coverage for a translator without a doubt. Makes you wonder if they were broadcasting outside of their licensed parameters? Like you, I haven't been out there or cared to track stations like I used to 8-7 years ago. Smartphones have killed FM radio for me.
