WIRJ (Humboldt, TN)

Back in 2013, WTNE 1500 was branded as "1500 Memories" with a Southern Gospel format. WTNE became WPOT in October, 2014. WPOT is licensed for 250 watts day and 6 watts night with a 100 foot tower.
Six watts? Why even be on at night? Do they stream, or is there any other way to get their signal?

250 watts daytime is also flea power.

WJPJ 1190 in Humboldt was purchased in August, 2012 by Palmer Johnson, and the station ran a "Classic Hits" format for several years. Meanwhile in Trenton, WTNE became WPOT in 2015, and the station began simulcasting Palmer Johnson's WJPJ and the "Classic Hits" format. In 2018, WJPJ changed to the current gospel/christian format and added an FM translator. WPOT is owned by Grace Broadcasting.

I'm not sure when and why WPOT went off the air. Had they continued simulcasting, the current gospel/christian format could be on in both Humboldt and Trenton.

With the recent talk here about Grave Broadcasting, they have just purchased WNWS 101.5 FM after a legal battle. See the new thread, "WNWS-FM Jackson Sold To End Legal Battle Between Two Talkers".

I checked again yesterday, and WIRJ is still off. Although the license was renewed 7/16/20, I haven't heard it on at all in 2020. I'm not sure it was on in 2019, either.

The license is now set to expire 08/01/2028.

I mean i kinda sorta understand WCTA, trying to keep it alive and kinda on the air.. but whats the point with WIRJ? It doesnt sound like it's been on in ages, but they renew the license.

I've checked several times recently, and WIRJ is still off, just as it's been for the last several years. I guess FCC rules and regulations mean nothing to them. I haven't checked, but wonder if the tower lights are even on at night anymore.

Sometimes rules mean nothing but the FCC is real specific about keeping towers lit even if the station is long gone. For the safety of aircraft in the area, I hope they're lit. Tons of small planes dart around generally without the same rules as commercial craft.

Unless things have changed, even small planes are supposed to fly at least 1,000 feet above the tallest structure in an area.

I don't know how that affects towers in various regions, but I seem to remember some AM directional arrays don't have lights on all towers. I can't remember if that was due to height or if it was because other towers nearby that were taller were lit.

Your broader point, however, is correct. Towers over 200 feet must be painted and/or lit even if they're not broadcasting.

I always remember the story of the old KTOZ 1060 in Springfield, MO. When it got ready to move downtown to the old KICK 1340 building, I'd always heard the owner took roughly 4 feet off the old KICK tower so he wouldn't have to light it. He made sure that was done before the previous tower in West Springfield was taken down. KBFL 1060 has since moved to another tower, and the old KICK/KTOZ tower is lit up at night now as that building is now home to Lost Signal Brewing! The old mailroom is where the brewing tanks are, and the old transmitter shack was taken out, and the building was expanded to add the kitchen.
