KAMP Unveils New Morning Mess

So they're still gonna be based out of here in Phoenix on Live 101.5 rather than be based in LA? Talk about a cost cutting move instead of hiring an LA based talent(s).

They're still going to be based in Phoenix, and they will continue to do their regular show. What they are adding is some specific content for use in LA.

This is very similar to what Ryan Seacrest does with his show at KIIS. Some of it is local for LA, and some of it is used in his daily syndicated show. In fact there's a lot of this kind of sharing of talent that goes on around the country.

Here's a more detailed version of the story:

Apparently they are skilled at creating entertaining unique content that's not specifically oriented to Phoenix and could apply to LA.

At least name wise - this new morning show is a great fit! "Mess" is the perfect adjective to describe 97.1 Damp Radio!

Another Phoenix-based morning show has been doing that for years. The Johnjay and Rich Show, which originates from KZZP (KISS FM 104.7), is heard on numerous smaller-market stations west of the Eastern Time Zone.

Originally, Howard Stern did the same thing. The company simply took his NYC show and rebroadcast it on other Infinity Broadcasting stations excluding the local traffic. The success of that led to wider national syndication.

“Joey Boy and The Morning Mess are a true reflection of Southern California,” Regional President Jeff Federman said in a release. “They are diverse, dynamic, socially responsible and completely transparent.”

But are any of them actually from Southern California? Or will this be an embarrassing case of out of towners doing an impression of what they think SoCal cares about? Seacrest has lived here for years and knows Los Angeles.

I listened to it a bit and it lives up to its name a mess. It isnt very good. They would have been better off keeping booker and company. Seems to me to be a bit of a hail mary pass.

But Seacrest does not do SoCal in his radio show... he does "Hollywood" and takes advantage of his contacts and friendships in the entertainment business.

Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and the current crop of night show hots don't do Southern California, either. They do entertainment.

LA, otherwise, is a rather boring town.

In a world of podcasting and smartphones, I truly do not think anyone cares about "live and local." Entertaining and keeping listeners engaged is key.

Also adding this: Mark Thompson and Bean Baxter were some of the top AM drive hosts in Los Angeles and didn't even live in the market. How important is it to be in LA again? ;)

Yeah I don’t think most people in Amp’s target demo could care less.

It’ll be interesting to see what ultimately happens in the long run. KAMP could eventually move to a new local morning show sometime in 2021, stick with this one, or end up flipping (as it’s been rumored in the past).

If it's a "stop the world" event, Entercom would probably switch to a simulcast of KNX. CBS did that a few times on its music stations when it owned them.

Looks like morning drive is now being voicetracked!

Well, thanks to their new morning show, the morning drive is going to be voice tracked. The hosts of the new show are in Phoenix and it's being syndicated to Los Angeles. What's next? KNX recording their overnight news?

Most of the Entercom all news-stations do some sort of recorded overnight news. I know it's done at KYW in Philly and WBZ in Boston.

As for the morning show being "voice tracked," it sounds similar to what Seacrest is doing at KIIS. Here's a quote from the LA Daily News story linked earlier in this thread:

While there will be certain evergreen bits and topics that are more universal, he added, these will be two really different shows; the music programming will be curated differently as well. “What’s popular in Los Angeles isn’t what’s popular in Phoenix,” he said. “So they’re working off of two separate music logs and that was key to the structure of this whole thing. Another thing COVID has forced us to do is utilize technology and push it to be able to have us do simultaneous content delivery for different places and target it so that when you listen to [‘The Morning Mess’] on AMP, you’ll be hearing about Southern California and not what’s happening in Phoenix.”

Howard Stern proved you can do an entertaining local show that can also play in other markets, including LA.

Mark & Brian and Kevin & Bean were very much of Los Angeles, however, mentioning local landmarks, events, personalities. Kevin & Bean made fun of KNBC reporters; did parody voices of the L.A. mayor; referred to topical L.A. things. I don't listen to Seacrest, but doesn't he do the same? But you're right, Howard Stern was successful here with a national show. And I wouldn't compare Carson/Leno/etc, those were national TV shows, not local radio shows.

Seacrest is mostly lifesyle and celebrities, not local politicians and events. Most of the Seacrest show is not done live; it is made up of workparts and pieces that are assembled... and also used in many markets outside of LA.
