WSCR AM HD Gone?

I've got a couple of questions about the HD signals for WSCR.

1. Have they turned off HD on AM 670? I now get an analog signal from both my car radio and my home radio, when I used to get it fine from both.

2. Any idea why there exists a lag on 104.3 HD2 as compared to the AM station?

Seems to be happening at a bunch of Entercom stations. WCBS, WINS and KYW all recently did away with their AM HD signals.

As for the lag, that’s probably due to the inherent delay associated with encoding HD. It usually adds about 7-10 seconds versus straight up analog.

Didn't somebody mention they've had trouble getting parts, or justifying the expense for parts? One of those sounds familiar to me.

Is that only the case for encoding HD on a subchannel? There wasn't any noticeable delay with the AM HD signal.

AM HD does have an encoding delay of several seconds. It should, however not be noticeable unless you're in studio, because HD broadcasters are supposed to delay their analog signal to match the HD delay exactly.

There has always been a considerable lag on 104.3 HD2, even when the AM HD signal was active. I noticed no lag on the AM HD signal as compared to the analog one, so I'm guessing they must've delayed the analog signal as you suggested.

AM or FM stations have to. There is like a 8 second delay for the digital stream, so one needs to delay the analog to match.

AM HD in hybrid mode has always been garbage technology. A properly engineered 10 kHz analog signal sounds as good or better than an HD hybrid mode signal from a fidelity standpoint.

So glad Entercom has ditched, at least for now, the hash-o-matic! :)

WWJ 950 and WXYT 1270 in Detroit turned off their HD exciters in March and have been broadcasting exclusively in analog ever since. Both widened their analog bandwidth spectrums within days of turning off the HD exciters.

Of course WXYT-AM is largely superfluous at this point.

I was just driving around listening to WWJ and the HD is back on, constantly switching between analog and HD. When I got home, I checked it on my Sangean HDR-14, and it easily locked on the HD signal on AM 950 WWJ. The Sangean did not sense HD on WXYT 1270.

Amazing that Jock Fritz bought WXYZ-AM for about $3 million in 1984 and changed it to WXYT. Ten years later, along with an FM he had bought for around $5 million (in a package with AM/FM in Toledo and Saginaw) sold for a total of $55 million; those were the opening days of consolidation and Fritz was a very smart seller.

I'll be darned - indeed, 950 WWJ's IBOC is on again!

WXYT's is still off.

I turned off HD on both AM and FM in my car several weeks ago. Many of the FM HD streams sound terrible in my market; poor bass response and improperly processed high treble. WRIF sounds particularly awful in HD. I have no use for any of the HD2 or HD3 feeds locally. (WDRQ-HD2 plays some decent music, but the audio fidelity is truly reprehensible making the station unlistenable.)

Obviously a good businessman.
