re Clingman's bandscan

Very cool! I was surprised by Atlanta catches until I looked at map! Also would have expected WSPA to own its channel up there.

I also would have expected more catches - what was on the other frequencies - a jumble, an unlistenable signal or nothing? When I've scanned FM at Snowshoe WV (arguably a more remote area, deep in the National Radio Quiet Zone) I feel like there were more listenable signal - but I could be mis-remembering. I'll do a proper scan up there one of these days.

I had a limited time so didn't identify something in every frequency (my wife, patient as she is, wasn't going to allow that). Sometimes though they were 3 deep. I actually seemed to have more Atlanta on a previous trip up the mountain. WSPA was strong except in that one spot, and I still don't know what that religious station was.

That's why I head out on most of my mountain hike excursions solo. But I always carry a cell phone in case I ever need help. However, a trip up to a very high summit (like Mt. Adams) won't happen anytime soon, and if ever, it will be with a partner or two, and multiple aspirins...

We drove up there, and didn't even even take the hike to the observatory. Still lots to see from the parking lot. One could make a reservation at LeConte Lodge which is only available via hiking, afraid that ship has sailed for me sans long-term training and getting in shape

Is there cellular coverage all the way up?

In some areas, yes. But my poor phone only roams on Sprint towers, which are limited in the Cascades. Strongly considering getting a US Cellular phone which roams on all the towers. Had 2-3 bars on Kachess Beacon last week, but on other mountains where I get 1-2 bars I can't lock on to dial out. It tries to dial for 20-30 seconds then hangs up...

As for us, never count on cell coverage in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I think we did get a bar or 2 at the top. We have US Cellular, which does great locally but get away from East Tennessee it has problems.

That’s a fun trip. I did that trip in 2008 and 2009 and did hike up to the top with my Sony Walkman and Sony Watchman portable TV. This was my log in 2008. Note that I did not spend time monitoring below 92.1 and that many call letters have changed since then.

I didn't spend much time in the non-commercial part of the band, but I did note that I receive WUTC 88.1 Chattanooga, WOEZ 88.3 Maynardville, TN, 91.1 WKCS Knoxville, 91.9 WUOT Knoxville.

Now for the TV signals I received:

2 WETP PBS Knoxville
3 WRCB NBC Chattanooga
4 WYFF NBC Greenville, SC
5 WCYB NBC Bristol, VA
6 WATE ABC Knoxville
8 WVLT CBS Knoxville
9 ?? ABC ??
10 WBIR NBC Knoxville
11 WJHL CBS Johnson CIty, TN (heavy interference by another UNID station)
12 WDEF CBS Chattanooga
13 WLOS ABC Asheville, NC
19 WKPT ABC Kingsport, TN
33 WUNF UNC-TV Asheville, NC
43 WTNZ FOX Knoxville
45 WTCI PBS Chattanooga
58 WUNG UNC-TV Concord, NC
61 WDSI FOX Chattanooga

No doubt the 9 ABC (back in the ole analog days) was WTVC Chattanooga. The 11 mixing with WJHL may have been WXIA, but that's quite a ways out.

Yes you are right about WTVC. I had forgotten that I was able to identify a few of these later with some help before. 95.1 was identified as WACF Young Harris, GA.

I also forgot to add that I also received two other FOX affiliates above 61, two other PBS stations on UHF, and a few more that I could not identify.

Very interesting more complete bandscan from 2008! I will have to go back and do a complete scan sometime. I'm very interested to know how conditions may change there, if they do.

As for the second religious station in 101.1, I don't know if the Church of Christ station in Gatlinburg would have been on in 2008, but of it was, that might be your most likely candidate. 100.7...probably WBGQ, Bulls Gap TN. That's about all I can fill in.

I wonder if 100.7 was WBGQ. It currently runs a top 40 format, but according to FCCdata.org, it has had those calls (and likely the same format) since signing on in 2001.

As for 95.1, I wonder what format then-WACF (now WJRB) was running at the time (it came on in late 2007).

Also, the FOX stations above 61 were probably translators of WHNS Greenville, SC. They had W64BO in Franklin, W66BU in Sylva, and W69CN in Bryson City. UNCTV had (and still has, all now digital) a lot of translators in western North Carolina

'Preciate the reply! It could take quite a while to untangle and ID everything in a spot like that!
