WKVB has applied for a new transmitter site

Yes, I’m in Somerville just a few miles away and it’s very weak here. I used to try to listen sometimes when it was “Big 105.3” playing satellite or voice tracked oldies.

Westwood one was entirely satellite fed... but if were going to get nitpicky, many of those formats are voicetracked.. most times within the hour the track airs (Ive seen one of their network studios HQ)

Though, the morning guy on Classic hits Oldies is Bruce Palmer whos at the Pike in Worcester, so it probably is voicetracked. Could be delivered by Storq, the system which has another computer at the station where all the music resides, the jock VT's from wherever they are and it gets pushed to the station directly

I’d think they’re voicetracked because their “airshifts” are eight hours long. Unlikely those DJ’s are actually live in real time for eight hours!

Though on the new 1510 WMEX Jimmy Jay is now doing nine hour live real time air shifts on both weekend days.

of course they are.. bruce palmer is mornings on the pike.. id wager the pike is VT'd in real time too.

The Pike in Worcester is his home base, where he is locally.

107.1 The duck, Z 104.9 and Z104 are all affiliates of the westwood one classic hits/oldies feed bruce palmer is also a jock on. many of the westwood one jocks on their various networks are jocks at cumulus owned stations

My sense is they knew they were going to sell it. Why else would they move Greg Hill and blow up the morning show?

Seems like they'd already decided then.

That still doesn’t explain why they didn’t think of doing it years ago when they first acquired the station and they were actively promoting it, instead of making that expensive and ineffective move from Paxton to W. Boylston back then.

It looks like this Hudson tower will be much more effective for their goal of reaching metro Boston than W. Boylston was, while still covering Worcester and much of Central MA well enough.

Id wager way back when in 1997 when entercom got it, the technology to model this kinda stuff didnt exist back then...... computers have been around in broadcast engineering awhile.. but theyve really changed alot in the last 10-15 years with more finite modeling abilities.

Id bet entercom didnt know they could.... and if they later thought they could, the cost would be way too expensive. PLUS, on channel boosters if not engineered extremely well and kept a close eye on, can wreak havoc and cause interference.

I worked for a station with one on channel booster that was mostly terrain shielded from the main, as the booster was down in a bowl.. but when you came out of the bowl, the two signals would clash and cause lots of static

Re:

...but why couldn't they simply have moved the main TX site to Hudson with no on-air boosters?

Certainly, that would've provided better Metro Boston coverage than West Boylston.

Way too expensive? I'm inclined to disagree. It doesn't cost that much money to manufacture and install a new transmitting antenna, and in either case, the tower space would be rented.

I believe that such a move would not have put the required signal over the COL, while boosters strengthen the signal in areas that are at the fringe without taking the coverage outside of the protection-required limits.

The COL has been changed years ago with the TX move from Paxton to W. Boylston from Worcester to Westborough. While Hudson may not have had adequate COL strength in parts of Worcester, I’d think it would in Westborough. It appears to for the new application.

Re:

What is the distance to the predicted 70 dBu contour for a Class B1? Is it still 23.2 kilometers?

Using the predicted contour method, if we were to apply commercial FM city grade service standards (I realize WKVB operates a under a non-comm license), it is possible the Hudson site would just barely meet FCC requirements for city grade service. It's a tough call.

Even if were to fail the test using the predicted contour method, it might pass the test using the Longley-Rice method.
