The pieces of the puzzle are fitting together

From Lance Venta at Radio Insight: (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/195902/station-sales-week-of-8-14/)

Family Life Broadcasting sells SIlent 93.5 K228DF Prescott AZ to Prescott Broadcasting for $7500. K228DF must return to the air by September 30 to retain its license. The buyer will rebroadcast Beautiful Music 102.1 KAHM Spring Valley AZ, which it programs via Time Brokerage Agreement.

All that's left is to turn on HD on 102.1, and the Cesar Chavez Foundation will have an impressive footprint for its Campesina format while 101 Strings continues on 93.5 & 102.1 HD2.

Brilliant. They made a pretty penny and still get to keep the revenue coming in. This was exactly our plan when we flipped KNRJ to The Beat in 2008. 101.1 was under contract to be sold to some group that was going to move it to Havasu or something which would have left us with 104.3 from Crown King and the 92.7 and 99.3 translators in the valley. Then the recession happened, the deal went belly up and Sierra H was able to hold on to 101.1 and move it to Crown King negating the need for the translators. And they never needed to pay the HD Radio people to activate the HD on KAJM which as I unerstand it is not cheap. Or at least wasn't at the time.

Not to mention Family Life was having a heck of a time with that translator:

WE UTILIZED FILTERS AND DIFFERENT ANTENNAS TO RECEIVE A GOOD ENOUGH SIGNAL FROM OUR FLAGSTAFF STATION KJTA AND THUS WERE ABLE TO REDUCE THE INPUT INTERFERENCE. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE TERRAIN, THE SIGNAL FROM A CO-CHANNEL TRANSLATOR OUTSIDE OF THE PRESCOTT AREA CAUSED SO MUCH INTERFERENCE TO THE K228DF OUTPUT WITHIN PRESCOTT, WE DETERMINED THAT WE COULD NOT CONTINUE BROADCASTING A POOR SIGNAL UNTIL WE FOUND A DIFFERENT SOLUTION TO RESOLVE BOTH INPUT AND OUTPUT INTERFERENCE PROBLEMS.

WITHIN THE PAST THREE MONTHS, A NEW OWNER OF THE SITE GREATLY INCREASED THE SITE RENT, AND THUS, AS A LISTENER SUPPORTED STATION NOT PROVIDING ADEQUATE QUALITY SIGNAL TO THE PRESCOTT COMMUNITY, WE TURNED OFF AND REMOVED OUR EQUIPMENT. WE HOPE TO FIND A SOLUTION OR ANOTHER LOCATION THAT WILL PROVIDE INTERFERENCE FREE OPERATION PRIOR TO WHEN THE K228DF LICENSE IS DISMISSED.

That other translator mentioned is probably K228XO (KAFF AM). I bet we see a Form 346 to move sites and fix the rent issue.

Niche signal for a niche format. Wait til listeners try to get the new station on their home radios. YIKES!!

I just want to point out that if this all turns out the way it appears to be heading, then it shows that the farmworkers union keeps their word.

Think about it. There's nothing in the written purchase agreement that the Silverstein family signed with the CCF when the station sold that says they had to do anything to lease the station to their GM or keep the format going. How many broadcast groups would have gone back on a handshake deal?

Maybe a call to Frank Kahlil would shed some light on this arrangement? Given CCF was selling their portion of 88~Three, you'd think they'd want a stronger signal than the 101~Nine translator paired to 8~Sixty. And why would CCF give Prescott Broadcasting ten years on their LMA for a rimshot?

The 93~Five translator being purchased by Prescott Broadcasting will be fed by KAHM. And as stated earlier, all KAHM needs to do is turn on their HD~Too and play 101 strings. That leaves 102~One open for another format..and the LMA agreement doesn't cover this scenario. The Media Hut hunch is rent will be a lot less for KAHM HD~Too than it is on 102~one. That could be incentive enough to move.

Don't forget the 101.7 translator that is a fill-in. They could always use 93.5 to fill in La Campesina and leave 101.7 with the beautiful music format.

True, dat. 101~Seven covers better than what is (or was) 93~Five. But wouldn't 102~One need HD~Three in order to put La Campesina on a translator? KYCA has its own translator, and Prescott Broadcasting has an LMA on that station as well.

Any use of this translator for KAHM's format while moving the analog signal to La Campesina requires HD anyway.

Now I want to go to Smitty's and pick up a 6-pack of Shasta.

With little to No warning, KAHM's translator at 101.7 went silent on September 11th.
Listeners found 93.5 rebroadcasting the main station from Mt Francis in Prescott.
The signal is clear only in those portions of town shielding K228XO, 93.5, KAFF Flagstaff.
Along Willow Creek and Willow Lake roads, the signal is unusable. The same is true in
Prescott Valley and Chino Valley. It is doubtful the signal will improve moving 93.5 to
Badger Mtn. 101.7 remains silent but in certain parts of town, you can barely hear
KQAZ, Show Low at 101.7. Meanwhile, K278CN, rebroadcasting 1490 KYCA from Badger
Mtn remains unchanged, so far. Clearly, in order of signal coverage, 101.7 K269EE, has the
best of the three, with K278CN 103.5, slightly weaker. K228DF 93.5, is a very distant last place.
Let the speculation begin!

I would suspect that 93.5 is going to move in frequency and/or location before it's all said and done, but they had to get it back on the air before October 1 to keep the license alive.

Can't explain why they took 101.7 down. Maybe they needed to borrow something from it to get 93.5 back on?

If you look at the maps for 101.7/103.5, they both cover more ground than 93.5. K228DF has a really narrow directional pattern. But now that the clock has stopped ticking on license cancellation, they have time to contemplate what to do with it.

Give me a 6 pack of Craigmont's "Skipper"

Mmm, if it had any flavor, you would swear it tastes just like a low budget version of Dr. Pibb!
