KQED Lays Off 20

What IS a bit shocking: these layoffs happened at a station consistently ranking #1 or #2 in the ratings.

The station doesn't make money from ratings, but grants, sponsorships, and memberships. They're all down by a lot right now due to economic uncertainty.

Yes but KQED Inc is dependent on donors just like every other NPR and PBS affiliates are facing across the country. It's the COVID-19 scare that lowered the donor revenue to these stations.

I realize KQED is non-commercial, but thought its large listenership would mean a large donation stream -- especially from the Bay Area's tech millionaires/billionaires. I doubt those execs are cutting back on giving; their companies are booming amid the pandemic.

That's a good point, but it just isn't translating into contributions. Just too much uncertainty. On the tech side, they may be doing well, but they're also under increased government scrutiny that has them all on edge. Nobody knows how that will turn out.

Even if the wealthy are maintaining their contributions, the folks we hear them asking for in pledge drives, who donate $10 or $20 a month are cutting back.
